"WALL4WOOD 20-21" WALL4WOOD - IMPROVEMENT OF THE DIMENSIONAL STABILITY, THE DURABILITY OF THE WOOD AND PREVENTION OF THE GROWTH OF FUNGI THROUGH HYDROPHOBIC COATINGS. DESCRIPTION The present research project aims to develop hydrophobic coatings on structural wood to avoid partially or completely the absorption of moisture by the wood. These coatings will preferably be developed using silica sol-gel technology. In addition, the hydrophobic coatings on structural wood proposed in the project will increase protection against xylophagous fungi, thus allowing their wider use in architecture and engineering. OBJECTIVES Create a new generation of hydrophobic coatings using silica sol-gel technology, which exhibit hydrophobic properties and are benign with the environment, which prevent the absorption of moisture by the wood. These properties will improve the dimensional stability and durability of the wood and, additionally, may prevent the appearance of fungi.
