GVA SUR0 - SMARTCOATING - SOLUTIONS FOR OBTAINING INTELLIGENT COATINGS




DESCRIPTION

During the realization of this project, the aim is to study and identify solutions and technologies associated with the field of smart coatings.
On the one hand, the encapsulation, in silica nanocapsules, of a corrosion indicator additive for sol-gel coatings applied to metals will be studied.
On the other hand, sol-gel formulations will be prepared on different substrates to evaluate the protection they can confer against fire.
These developments are aimed, mainly, at industry and the environment.

OBJECTIVES

- Prepare silica nocapsules that act as indicators of corrosion on metals.

- Prepare sol-gel coating that confers fire resistance on different substrates.

Year 2020: Nanocapsules

- Encapsulation of phenolphthalein in silica nanocapsules through water-in-oil (O/W) emulsion using ultrasound or vigorous stirring, varying reaction conditions and reagents used.
- Obtaining a white powdery material, composed of spherical nanoparticles (between 0.1 and 1 µm in diameter), which varies in color with changes in pH.
- Addition of these additives to an epoxy formulation and their integration into the formulation is notable, since no major aesthetic defects are seen.

flame retardants

- Preparation of sol-gel formulations with flame retardants without polyphosphates.
- Use of silica and titania nanomaterials or polydopamine (PDA) nanomaterials in epoxy-type coating, which have shown a flame retardant effect in other applications. They were applied with a gun.
- Use of sol-gel type formulations that were applied by immersion. Polydopamine was also applied by immersion.
- Evaluation of the flame retardant effect of formulations with or without additives on a silestone type substrate; For this, the speed of heat generation was characterized (cone calorimetric method), according to ISO 5660-1:2015 standard.
- Epoxy coating treatments applied with a gun increased heat generation.
- Sol-gel immersion treatments decreased heat generation, which is why they showed a good flame retardant effect.
During the execution of the project, nanomaterials have been obtained that contain organic molecules that can be integrated into sol-gel formulations of the epoxy type and are useful for use in applications such as, for example, corrosion detection.

On the other hand, polyphosphate-free, environmentally benign or non-toxic flame retardant treatments have been developed, showing promising flame retardant properties.
