"MATRAFOC 19-20" MATRAFOC- IMPROVEMENT OF BEHAVIOR AGAINST THE FIRE OF TREATED WOOD FOR DIFFERENT USES DESCRIPTION The general objective of the project is the analysis of the reaction to fire performance of the treated wood according to the final conditions of use. Treatment with flame retardants considerably improves the reaction to fire behavior of wood products. However, this behavior can be affected by exposure to humid environments, therefore the ability of these treatments to maintain this performance against fire after exposure to these conditions and to coexist with additives against biological agents (xylophagous fungi, must be demonstrated). Coleoptera, Termites ...). In the market you can find wood classified according to the use classes according to the UNE-EN 335: 2013 standard, but very recently the new European standard EN 16755: 2017 has been created (whose official version in Spanish is UNE-EN 16755: 2018), whose objective is the evaluation of the durability of the fire reaction benefits to classify fire-retardant wood-based products for use indoors and outdoors, since these fire reaction benefits can be reduced by exposure to steam from water and / or wet conditions and the ability of fire-retardant treatments to maintain such performance must be demonstrated even after exposure to such conditions. Therefore, a product derived from wood should not only be classified according to UNE-EN 335: 2013, but it should also be classified according to the new regulation EN 16755: 2017, and it is necessary to ask if the current exterior use classes are capable of achieving the durability class for outdoor use of the new regulations. OBJECTIVES The general objective of the project is to investigate the fire performance of treated wood products in accordance with their final conditions of use, in accordance with the new European regulations UNE-EN 16755: 2018, in order to be able to meet both the requirements for the provision of reaction to fire as with end use conditions. The novelty of the project lies in the evaluation of the performance of reaction to fire before and after aging with humidity according to the UNE-EN 16755: 2018 standard, since humidity can produce a migration of flame retardants towards the surface in the form of saline crystallization, reducing the performance of reaction to fire compared to the product without aging. Given that to date, the characterization of the reaction to fire performance of wood has been carried out without taking into account aging due to environmental humidity, the project aims to publicize the relative new European standard UNE-EN 16755: 2018. In this way, it will be evaluated whether the flame retardants used maintain fire performance after aging humidity, since these benefits may change and, in this case, continue with the investigation.
