"AVI REMETALIZES" AVI REMETALIZES - INDUSTRIAL SYMBIOSIS BETWEEN TRADITIONAL SECTORS OF THE VALENCIAN COMMUNITY THROUGH THE RECOVERY AND VALORIZATION OF HEAVY METALS DESCRIPTION The Valencian Community and Spain depend, to a large extent, on third countries for the supply of metals; Furthermore, the concepts of Circular Economy and Industrial Symbiosis are gaining prominence within all productive sectors, to such an extent that they turn out to be the natural and consequent evolution of the environmental improvements achieved in the last century, in each and every one of the sectors. industrial. Therefore, the recovery of metals contained in waste, specifically copper and chromium, in order to optimize their use and help reduce dependence on third parties, is an activity of high interest. Furthermore, the application of recovered metals in different traditional sectors of the Valencian Community generates synergies between them, giving rise to greater efficiency and competitiveness, in addition to reducing their waste management costs and their carbon footprint. This project is funded by the European Union through the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) Comunitat Valenciana 2021-2027 Programme. OBJECTIVES The main objective of the proposal is to carry out an experimental development in which a study of the existing synergies between 5 characteristic sectors of the Valencian Community (Metal-mechanical, Toy (plastic), Textile, Footwear and Ceramics) is carried out from a perspective of Circular Economy and Industrial Symbiosis and applied to the valorization of heavy metals (mainly chromium and copper). Project Number: 22300066 Grant Agreement: INNEST / 2023/30 Duration: From 01/05/2023 to 31/12/2025 Coordinated in AIDIMME by: POCOVI MARTINEZ, SALVADOR R&D Line: CIRCULAR ECONOMY RESULTS OBTAINED Año 2024: During the second year of the project, waste streams with high Cr and Cu content have been characterized and selected. These come from companies in the Valencian Community and have a high potential for the recovery of the metals they contain. The streams characterized and selected in AIDIMME are an acid copper recovery bath and a depleted hard chromium bath. After the selection, different physical- and electrochemical techniques were studied to recover the Cu and Cr contained in each stream. The best technique for recovering Cu from the bath was electrochemically, and Cr was recovered more efficiently physically and chemically. The metallic Cu obtained is highly pure. The possibility of reusing it as a secondary raw material in coatings generated by physical vapour deposition (PVD) for the plastics (AIJU) and leather (INESCOP) sectors is being evaluated. On the other hand, the respective oxides (CuO and Cr2O3) were also obtained from metallic Cu and chromium hydroxide respectively, applying a thermal treatment. The possibility of reusing these oxides as secondary raw materials for plastics (AIJU), ceramics (ITC-AICE) and textiles (Prato, UPV) is being evaluated in different entities of the Valencian Community, since they have a high purity. Finally, different treatments for the acid copper recovery bath are being evaluated, and Cu sulphate (CuSO4) is beginning to be obtained, which, after characterization, will be evaluated for its valorization in the agrochemical sector.
