"AVI - REMOURE" AVI - REMOURE - LEAKAGE OF MICROPLASTICS ACCORDING TO THE CAPTURE MODEL IN MEDITERRANEAN MARINE ORGANISMS DESCRIPTION The objective of the project is to investigate the feeding apparatus of certain Mediterranean marine species, such as the basking shark or the devil manta, through physical and virtual simulations to understand the hydrodynamic mechanisms that provide the animal's very high microplankton capture efficiency, and to treat to replicate said system by applying it to the elimination of micro plastics in wastewater. The aim is to develop and validate a new low-cost technology for the elimination of microplastics in wastewater to reduce the impact on the receiving media, returning to the environment water and sludge with guaranteed quality that allows its safe reuse. Throughout the initiative, the filtration system of marine species will be studied, analyzed and reproduced. Virtual and physical models of said system will be reproduced to understand the mechanisms involved in the observed efficiency of capturing microparticles of said species. Based on the studies carried out, a pilot will be built that incorporates a physical model of the filtration system of the studied marine organisms made using 3D printing. The pilot built will be used to carry out tests to eliminate microplastics in wastewater. OBJECTIVES The specific objectives of the project are specified in: • Characterize the feeding apparatus of certain Mediterranean marine species as well as the hydrodynamic flows that provide the capture efficiency of these apparatus. • Design a filter for the elimination of micro plastics in wastewater. • Demonstrate the filtration efficiency of the proposed system in real wastewater. • Determine the energy efficiency of the system and the best operating regime. Project Number: 22200071 Grant Agreement: INNEST / 2022/131 Duration: From 01/06/2022 to 31/08/2024 Coordinated in AIDIMME by: MARIN MATEOS APARICIO, LUIS R&D Line: CIRCULAR ECONOMY RESULTS OBTAINED Year 2024: To optimize the efficiency of the system, the system has been resized using computational fluid dynamics, studying different configurations. It has been possible to homogenize the output through the filter over the entire surface and reduce the overpressure, reducing pressure losses. Therefore, a CFD calculation model adjusted to the tests on the hydrodynamic bench has been achieved. For the adjustment, the ink values ​​that pass between lobes have been used. The values ​​from the test were available from the processing of the videos and the values ​​of passage between lobes have been extracted from the calculation using a two-phase model of water and ink. Using this CFD calculation model, a microplastic filter model inspired by the food capture system of the manta ray has been developed and analyzed. The analysis of the filter by simulation has made it possible to optimize it. Finally, the design, construction and testing of a pilot microplastic filtration system has been carried out. With this, tests have been carried out with different models and the efficiency of the filtering has been evaluated with satisfactory results. - Year 2023: During the REMOURE project, biomimetics is being used to develop a new filtration system for the elimination of microplastics in wastewater, inspired by the feeding system of the Mobula mobular, a Manta Ray present in the Mediterranean. To this end, the animal's feeding apparatus is being investigated. Based on the studies carried out, a pilot will be built that will incorporate a physical model of the filtration system of the studied organism made using 3D printing. The research carried out has been structured through the following Work Packages: (1) Search for bibliographic background and characterization of microplastics in wastewater; (2) Morphological analysis of the filtration systems of the specimens to be studied, including the deployment of an international network of contacts to identify animals captured by by-catch, taking samples and tomography of the device, and their reproduction using 3D modeling and additive manufacturing techniques; (3) Design and construction of a 3D hydrodynamic bench, for the analysis of flows through the filtration elements, which facilitates the subsequent computational fluid modeling (CFD) of the parts.
