AVI - REMOURE - LEAKAGE OF MICROPLASTICS ACCORDING TO THE CAPTURE MODEL IN MEDITERRANEAN MARINE ORGANISMS




DESCRIPTION

The objective of the project is to investigate the feeding apparatus of certain Mediterranean marine species, such as the basking shark or the devil manta, through physical and virtual simulations to understand the hydrodynamic mechanisms that provide the effectiveness of microplankton capture so of the animal, and try to replicate this system by applying it to the elimination of microplastics in wastewater.
The aim is thus to develop and validate a new low-cost technology for the elimination of microplastics in wastewater to reduce the impact on the receiving media, returning to the environment water and sludge with guaranteed quality that allows its safe reuse.
Throughout the initiative, the filtration system of marine species will be studied, analyzed and reproduced. Virtual and physical models of said system will be reproduced to understand the mechanisms involved in the observed efficiency of capturing microparticles of said species.
Based on the studies carried out, a pilot will be built that incorporates a physical model of the filtration system of the studied marine organisms made by 3D printing. The built pilot will be used to carry out tests for the elimination of microplastics on wastewater.

OBJECTIVES

The specific objectives of the project are specified in:
• Characterize the feeding apparatus of certain Mediterranean marine species as well as the hydrodynamic flows that provide the capture efficiency of these apparatus.
• Design a filter for the elimination of micro plastics in wastewater.
• Demonstrate the filtration efficiency of the proposed system in real wastewater.
• Determine the energy efficiency of the system and the best operating regime.

RESULTS OBTAINED

Year 2023: During the REMOURE project, biomimetics is being used to develop a new filtration system for the elimination of microplastics in wastewater, inspired by the feeding system of the Mobula mobular, a Manta Ray present in the Mediterranean. To this end, the animal's feeding apparatus is being investigated. Based on the studies carried out, a pilot will be built that will incorporate a physical model of the filtration system of the studied organism made using 3D printing. The research carried out has been structured through the following Work Packages: (1) Search for bibliographic background and characterization of microplastics in wastewater; (2) Morphological analysis of the filtration systems of the specimens to be studied, including the deployment of an international network of contacts to identify animals captured by by-catch, taking samples and tomography of the device, and their reproduction using 3D modeling and additive manufacturing techniques; (3) Design and construction of a 3D hydrodynamic bench, for the analysis of flows through the filtration elements, which facilitates the subsequent computational fluid modeling (CFD) of the parts.
