HEA CLADDING - DEVELOPMENT OF HIGH ENTROPY MATERIALS THROUGH PROJECTION TECHNIQUES




DESCRIPTION

The high level of demand in some fields of industry such as the energy or aerospace sector requires materials in constant evolution. These sectors are always on alert before the appearance of new materials in any of its forms or presentation. High-entropy materials have been on the rise in the last 20 years, and have attracted special attention not only because of the properties demonstrated, but also because of the wide range that they may present in the future.
Within this framework is the current project, through which it is intended to develop high-entropy materials in the form of a coating. The study of this project aims to evaluate the performance of coatings using laser cladding techniques, capable of competing with current materials both for the aeronautical sector and the energy sector, in which materials capable of withstanding stresses at high temperatures in service. The appearance of this type of materials supposes a change in the concept known until now of solid solution in metallic alloys, and can suppose a significant advance in the industrial sector as it is shown in the exponential increase of research articles that is taking place in the last years.

OBJECTIVES

The general objective of the project is to obtain different types of high-entropy coatings using laser cladding techniques. In this way, the aim is to achieve results that can be used both in the energy and/or biomedical sectors.

The specific objectives are:
• The optimization of the parameters of the type of process selected, in order to obtain high-entropy coatings free of defects such as cracks or porosity.
• Relate the mechanical properties obtained with the characteristics of the process.
• Establish a relationship between the process parameters and the associated defectology in these materials.
• Advanced characterization of new coatings:
o Tribological analysis
o Degrees of mechanical resistance.
o Microstructural evolution of the processed materials through the thermal history that we find in the production chain.
• Evaluation of application routes.

RESULTS OBTAINED

Year 2023: The processing of high entropy alloys has been achieved in powder format through mechanical alloying techniques, specifically of the TiNbZrTa alloy, both in an equiatomic distribution and in an equimassic distribution. With the results, it has been possible to demonstrate the dispersion in terms of mechanical characteristics of the TiNbZrTa material after spraying, observing a pattern of behavior in relation to power and feed speed. These behavioral patterns are also observed after the thermal treatments carried out after the projections.
