"FEDER PIEZO"

FEDER PIEZO - TENSIONAL STUDY OF METAL COMPONENTS USING PIEZOELECTRIC SENSORS

DESCRIPTION

The project is part of the technological development associated with monitoring the structural health of various components, and in particular of metal structures, which require detailed control that can be used within the predictive maintenance system. A state of operation over time requires a guarantee that its performance remains in accordance with specifications throughout its life cycle. Within this framework, the project seeks to develop a predictive system for torque loss by means of the development of piezoelectric sensors and the measurement of electromechanical impedance. The main objective is based on the development of sensors capable of delivering real-time information on compromise structures using this technology. The way to ensure the correct operation of fastening systems is based on guaranteeing the transmission of load tension on the rods, so obtaining sensors capable of determining this torque loss can provide a guarantee of product life use. The effectiveness of these systems depends largely on the dynamic capacity of the structure to be analysed, which means that the use of these systems requires validation tests and/or calibration of the sensors. For validation, it is necessary to know the stress states present in the components, so it is essential to know the loads and their response, something that can only be obtained on test benches.

OBJECTIVES

The overall objective of the project is the development and implementation of an emerging sensor technology capable of monitoring the structural health of mechanical components of various kinds. The project will be based on the study of various components, with special emphasis on structures in which fastener-based joining systems are used. The technology used during the project is based on mechanical impedance through the use of piezoelectric sensors. These piezoelectric transducers are sensitive to the voltage created in the vicinity of the analysis area. The measurement of the electromechanical impedance of the piezoelectric transducer can be used to determine the voltage. The results can satisfy the market need for monitoring mechanical structures to carry out preventive maintenance that can guarantee adequate quality during the life of the components.

RESULTS OBTAINED

Year 2025: The PIEZO research project (IMDEEA/2024/73), an action supported by the Conselleria d'Innovació, Indústria, Comerç i turisme de la Generalitat Valenciana, through IVACE, and financed by the European Union, through the FEDER Comunitat Valenciana 2021-2027 Program, has been successfully completed, fulfilling the objectives and commitments initially established, in execution from 01/07/2024 to 31/10/2025. The results of this research have yielded significant findings, which, along with the detailed conclusions, can be found in Deliverable E2.2_Results Report, accessible at https://www.aidimme.es/serviciosOnline/difusion_proyectos/default.asp. The project is aimed at companies in the metal construction, engineering, automotive, and component manufacturing sectors of the Valencian Community, directly benefiting over a thousand companies linked to these sectors and subsectors, ultimately leading to improvements for society as a whole. We thank the collaborating companies, KAMAX, FACTOR INGENIERÍA Y DECOLETAJE, and TSV TECNOLOGÍA SEGURIDAD VIAL, who contributed their knowledge and support throughout this project. Their contribution has been fundamental to the success of this initiative. For any further questions or to discuss future lines of research based on these results, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Deliverables:

2024: During 2024, work was done on defining the standard systems and the testing plan for the project. The standard components to be studied were defined for both real-world physical testing and sensor testing. At the same time, computer design and simulation of these components began, taking into account various loading scenarios. Material types and bolt qualities have been established. FEM load simulation studies will allow us to evaluate the integrity and behavior of the various standard structures, which we will be able to study along with the sensor values, which were also analyzed during 2024, in order to select and determine which one to use for each scenario.
