RECIBAT - METHODOLOGY FOR SUSTAINABLE RECYCLING OF METALS CONTAINED IN LITHIUM BATTERIES

DESCRIPTION

The RECIBAT project aims to define and develop a competitive methodology for the treatment and recovery of the main metals (Li, Co, Ni, Mn) contained in a lithium battery. To do this, cathodic materials must be selected, designed and carried out selective metal extraction tests by means of sustainable leaching processes or direct electrolysis. The results of the project will involve the development of a competitive route with current recycling processes.

OBJECTIVES

The main objective of the project is to develop a methodology with a low environmental impact for the recovery of the main metals contained in lithium batteries. The process to be developed will be based on electrochemical techniques, given the low consumption of resources and high performance associated with this type of technology.
The general objective will be achieved from the following specific objectives:
• Characterization of the different cathodic, laminar and black mass materials, in order to know the type / s of starting composition and to be able to evaluate the efficiency of the recovery processes.
• Determination of the configuration of the electrochemical reactor for each type of input material based on the tests to be carried out to obtain maximum performance.
• Determination of the best operating conditions for maximum leaching of metals and thus favoring their subsequent recovery.
• Design and development of a procedure for the selective recovery of the different metals dissolved in the leaching liquor.
• Characterization of recovered metals.
• Development of a complete procedure as well as proposals to favor a future scaling up of the process through a sustainable methodology with a reduced carbon footprint.

RESULTS OBTAINED

Year 2022: The main result of the project has been the development of a methodology for the leaching and/or route for the recovery of the main metals contained in the active material of lithium ion batteries using electrochemical and sustainable processes. The treatment sequence has made it possible to extract > 99% of the Al, Ni, Co and Li present in the NCM battery cathode for subsequent recovery.
The application of electrochemical technology has made it possible to minimize the consumption of chemical products and reduce the number of stages for recycling.
With the development of the RECIBAT Project, specific objectives initially proposed have been achieved, such as:
- The characterization of different active cathode materials incorporated in lithium ion batteries in different formats; sheets and black mass (BMC) confirming the trend to reduce the cobalt content of lithium ion batteries (NMC) compared to the first batteries incorporated in EVs (LCO).
- Determine the optimal configuration of the electrochemical reactor based on the cathode material to be processed.
- The evaluation of the best conditions for the leaching and recovery processes of metals from lithium ion batteries.
- Substantially improve the metal recovery methodology with respect to current practices carried out through pyrometallurgical and hydrometallurgical processes.
- With electrochemical leaching it has been possible to reduce the concentration of sulfuric acid, ruling out the use of reducers and the leaching temperature (500C compared to 700C), consequently minimizing the environmental impact.

The image shows the methodology developed in the project.

The results obtained allow us to continue with the development through a scale-up in a pilot plant that allows us to confirm the reliability of the methodology.
