"LIFE WASTE2COAG"

LIFE WASTE2COAG - BRINE AND METAL WASTE VALORIZATION TO PRODUCE COAGULANTS FOR WASTEWATER TREATMENT

DESCRIPTION

Reverse osmosis (RO) and ion exchange (IE) are perceived as viable and feasible solutions to address freshwater scarcity, through seawater desalination and wastewater reuse, and to provide quality water for industrial processes (automotive, food and beverage, pharmaceutical, etc.). In RO and IE the feed water is separated into two streams, water and high salinity brines that are normally treated as waste. It is estimated that there are 15.906 desalination plants (DP) in operation in the world, which generate around 142 million m3 / day of brines. The European Union (EU) and Spain represent 9,2 and 5,7% of the total installations, respectively.
Most brines are discharged into the environment without treatment through sewage discharge, deep well injection, evaporation ponds, and land application or wastewater treatment plants.
On the other hand, due to the growing demand for metals, there has been a scarcity of resources, an increase in prices and environmental impacts derived from both the demand and the unsustainable management of metal waste. In the EU, only about 3% of the raw materials needed to maintain a growing demand for metals are produced.
In this sense, it is evident the need for solutions that adopt a new model of resource efficiency and circular economy, based on the recovery of brines and metallic waste to produce coagulants for wastewater treatment and contribute to protecting the environment.
The electrolytic technology to be applied is operated with renewable energy, turning the process into a completely sustainable process based on the use of waste as raw materials and renewable energy.

OBJECTIVES

The general objective of the project is the demonstration of an innovative and cost-effective technology based on waste electrolysis to produce coagulants for the removal of contaminants in wastewater, including contaminants and emerging pathogens. The coagulant concentration will be modified on demand, as well as the chemical nature of the inorganic salt with a simple reversal of polarity to obtain different product formulations. These products will be applied to ensure high quality effluents in urban and industrial WWTPs.
The general objective of the project is the demonstration of an innovative and cost-efficient technology based on the electrolysis of wastes in order to produce coagulants for the removal of pollutants in wastewaters, including emerging pollutants and pathogens. The concentration of coagulant will be modified on demand, as well as the chemical nature of the inorganic salt with a simple polarity inversion to obtain different product formulations. These products will be applied to secure high-quality effluents in urban and industrial WWTPs.
Industrial scrap metallic wastes and brines generated in different industries, including WWTPs and DPs will be valorised. Therefore, the project boosts the circular economy in water treatment plants and creates synergies with other sectors. Electrolysis will be applied in maximum efficiency conditions, using renewable energy, thanks to the use of residues with high conductivity, favoring sustainability.
