"GVA ZEWASTREND FUNDS"

GVA EC0 - ZEWASTREND - ZERO EMISSIONS IN WASTE PROCESSING PLANTS

DESCRIPTION

The continuous growth of the consumer society and the demand for raw materials forces us to consider waste recovery strategies and the search for sustainable and environmentally friendly processes.
The Zewastrend Project has two lines of work, on the one hand to investigate alternatives for the recycling of Li batteries and on the other to study zero-discharge processes in hazardous packaging waste treatment plants.
The research works are developed from an updated review of numerous published documents, studies and articles on related subjects.
The works consulted seem to point to the need for a correct identification of compositions and correct segregation of waste for the optimization of the recovery processes of any sector.

OBJECTIVES

The objectives are related to the two lines of work carried out:
- Design of proposals to achieve zero emissions in waste treatment plants for plastic packaging and

- Identification and technical-economic analysis of management systems for the recycling of lithium batteries.

Project Number: 22000002

RESULTS OBTAINED

Year 2021: DELIVERABLE

Deliverables:

Year 2021: In line with the objectives set regarding plastic packaging waste, different solutions and technologies have been identified, ranging from conventional biological treatments to the combination of thermal and advanced oxidation processes commonly used in management and treatment processes. of hazardous waste and leachates. After a review of the advantages and disadvantages of the processes that best fit the needs and conditions of treatment of waste with a high refractory organic load, the evapo oxidation process with heat recovery seems to respond to the definition of a sustainable system for the treatment of effluents with high organic load and considerable PCI.
With evaporation and subsequent thermal oxidation, the elimination of high concentrations of complex non-biodegradable organic matter contained in the effluents is achieved. The destruction of the light organic vapors contained in the evaporation condensate represents an effective reduction of the resulting waste, only the evaporation concentrate remains, and no subsequent processes (biological, physical-chemical) are required for its treatment. The incorporation of fractional distillation systems in the feed of the evaporation process eliminates the intrinsic risks to the low flash point provided by solvents. The acid vapors generated in the thermal combustion of the E-OX process can be neutralized in a gas scrubber.
Regarding alternatives for recycling Li batteries, in 2020 a review of the state of the art of the research lines and systems present on the market for the recycling of Li batteries was carried out. After analyzing the processes that seem to be more respectful of the environment and given that it seems logical not to repeat strategies already investigated but rather to look for sustainable ways for the complete recycling of batteries, the work proposal should begin by identifying equipment and creating synergies for efficient recycling. It is proposed to work with hydrometallurgical processes in the stages of metal extraction from the battery and recovery with technologies that incorporate reagents recovered from waste and/or friendlier conditions.
