EVALUATION OF THE FEASIBILITY OF CYCLIC CORROSION TESTS FOR DETERMINING THE DURABILITY OF COATINGS IN VARIOUS ATMOSPHERIC CORROSIVITY SCENARIOS




DESCRIPTION

Currently, strategic industrial sectors, such as automotive and aerospace, have shifted away from static corrosion testing (conventional salt spray) in favor of cyclic corrosion testing. This transition is due to the fact that cyclic tests allow for a more accurate simulation of real-world service conditions by integrating multiple critical variables such as temperature, relative humidity, and chloride concentration.

The fundamental objective of this approach is to improve the reproducibility of behavior and the estimation of product lifespan, aligning with regulations that classify environmental corrosivity and establish durability periods based on experimental laboratory studies.

OBJECTIVES

The objectives of the CORCICLIC project are:

- Regulatory Review and Cycle Selection: Conduct a thorough analysis of the ISO/TR 16335 technical report to determine if the cycle used in CORCLIM is optimal or if there are more suitable configurations for the joint study of steel and zinc.

- Theoretical Modeling of Degradation: Calculate, under the parameters of the ISO 9224 standard, the theoretical mass loss of both materials for prolonged exposure periods, 5, 15, 25 years, …, in different corrosivity categories.

- Experimental-Theoretical Correlation: Perform cyclic corrosion chamber tests using the selected cycles to replicate the theoretically calculated mass losses, thus establishing the number of equivalent cycles for each durability grade and corrosivity category.
