"TOXO ARTICOV"

EMISSION AND DISTRIBUTION OF VOCs IN INDOOR AIR FROM DIFFERENT SOURCES

DESCRIPTION

The entry into force in 2026 of ECHA Regulation (EU) 2023/1464 requires manufacturers of products intended for public use and used indoors to comply with new emission limits for formaldehyde and VOCs in the European market. Given the complexity, geometry, and size of the materials, a European group of laboratories (TG REACH) proposes grouping them into families through screening, provided their emissions are equivalent. These measurements will allow for the precise determination of VOC concentrations in climate chambers of varying volumes and, therefore, the assessment of their impact on health. Due to the very strict limits of the regulation, it is necessary to analyze the accuracy of the analytical methods and study the influence of sample geometry and size on emissions.

It is essential to control exposure areas and verify how many and what items can generate a contaminated indoor environment.

On the other hand, another relevant factor in indoor air quality is the presence of radon. The project proposes to conduct radon concentration studies in workplaces, especially on ground floors or in basements, in accordance with Directive 2013/59/Euratom. Alternatively or as a complement, it proposes to evaluate radon levels in existing homes. In both cases, the measurements will be carried out with detectors supplied and analyzed by a laboratory accredited according to UNE EN ISO/IEC 17025, guaranteeing valid and traceable results.

OBJECTIVES

- Evaluation and detection of VOC emissions in indoor air from different everyday items.
- Modulation of air renewal in chamber according to applicable regulations.
- Equivalence of different VOC measurement methods for (formaldehyde, aldehydes or other carbon compounds), including Aero laser methodology, liquid chromatography (HPLC), acetylacetone and gas chromatography (thermo-desorption).
- Measurement of the noble gas Radon in indoor air, as an atmospheric pollutant, in different real-life habitable scenarios (homes, work offices).
