"TOX0 FGVA - MIGRA-HALO"

MIGRA-HALO: INVESTIGATION OF THE FACTORS THAT INFLUENCE THE MIGRATION OF FLUORINATED COMPOUNDS AND OTHER HALOGENATED SUBSTANCES FOR COMPLIANCE WITH NEW LEGISLATION ON CELLULOSIC MATERIALS (IN COLLABORATION WITH E+T)

DESCRIPTION

Fluoride derivatives have traditionally been used to impart fat-resistant properties to cellulosic materials. In recent years, legislation has focused on the presence of organofluoride in packaging materials, leading to the development of laws, such as those in France and Denmark, that restrict its use. The presence of fluoride can also result in perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), which affect the immune and reproductive systems and increase the risk of developing cancer, among other effects.

OBJECTIVES

The objectives of the project are:

• Development of a method for determining the presence of halogens in cellulosic materials, with special emphasis on fluorinated compounds, accurate enough to comply with the legislation that comes into force this year 2026.
• Quantification of the presence of fluorinated halogenated compounds in cellulosic materials, in order to assess the current global level of compliance in these materials with the legislated limits.
