CERVERA - INNOVATION IN MATERIALS FOR ADVANCED HIGH-TEMPERATURE APPLICATIONS AND DUAL FUNCTIONALITY




DESCRIPTION

The IrATi Network is a cluster of excellence comprised of six technology centers (AIDIMME, LORTEK, CEIT, IDONIAL, LEITAT, and LUREDERRA) that collaborate on the design, processing, and validation of advanced materials for high-temperature applications with a dual purpose (civilian and defense). The project focuses on the development of new nickel-, copper-, and aluminum-based superalloys, as well as resistant coatings and nanomaterials, to improve durability and efficiency under extreme operating conditions. This initiative fully covers the value chain, from computational modeling to prototype validation, addressing the needs of strategic sectors such as aerospace, energy, naval, and large scientific facilities.

OBJECTIVES

The overall objective of the IrATi network of excellence is to strengthen the capabilities of participating technology centers through research and development of advanced materials not currently available on the market. These materials are based on novel metal alloys and metal matrix composites reinforced with particles and fibers. The aim is to utilize innovative processes for raw materials in powder and yarn form to produce components and coatings that guarantee greater durability, thermal stability, and oxidation resistance in propulsion and structural applications. Furthermore, the project seeks to promote advanced training, attract talent, and facilitate the transfer of these technological results to national and international industry.

The specific objectives of the project are the following:
- Define requirements and specifications for each family of advanced materials according to their future application.
- Design and model the new alloys (Ni, Cu, Al base) and their reinforcements (nanoparticles and fibers).
- Research and develop the processes for obtaining raw materials (atomization, vacuum melting, synthesis, etc.)
- Characterize the raw material to ensure its chemical composition, morphology and appropriate sizes.
- Innovate in transformation processes, including additive manufacturing, isostatic pressing and hot extrusion.
- Study the microstructural and mechanical properties of the material after manufacturing (as-built state).
- Investigate customized heat treatments and new chemical and surface post-processing routes to improve finishes and properties.
- Evaluate the properties at high temperature and long duration through tests on test specimens and small prototypes (mock-ups).
- Compare the results against commercial materials to quantify the improvements achieved.
- Boost network visibility and accelerate technology transfer to industry for dual-use applications.
