NATURICOR - DEVELOPMENT OF BIOBASED CORROSION INHIBITING ADDITIVES FOR FERRIC SUBSTRATES




DESCRIPTION

Steel corrosion is an electrochemical process in which the metal degrades due to its reaction with oxygen and moisture in the environment. This phenomenon occurs when steel forms a galvanic cell in the presence of an electrolyte, such as water, where the iron oxidizes and releases electrons, while oxygen is reduced on the metal surface. The result is corrosion products such as iron oxide (rust), which weaken the material's structure, reduce its lifespan, and can compromise the safety of infrastructure and industrial equipment.

This phenomenon is accelerated in the presence of aggressive agents such as chlorides and acids, affecting infrastructure, machinery, and metal products in multiple industries. To mitigate this problem, corrosion inhibitors are used—chemical substances that reduce the rate of steel oxidation by forming a protective barrier on its surface or by altering the electrochemical equilibrium of the reaction. Among the most common inhibitors are chromium compounds, phosphates, and amines, which are used in coatings, cooling fluids, and piping systems. However, many of these products contain toxic or environmentally persistent substances, posing risks to human health and ecosystems.

The NATURICOR project seeks to obtain anticorrosive additives using biobased shell waste extracts and incorporating them into a coating, specifically for ferrous materials.

OBJECTIVES

The overall objective of the project is to obtain anticorrosive additives using biobased shell waste extracts and validate them in relevant/real-life formulations and cases.

The active ingredient used in the corrosion inhibitors developed in this project is peels discarded in industrial processes, such as juice companies, in the case of fruit peels. This development allows for closing the production cycle, promoting a circular economy with new products beneficial to various industries in the Valencian Community.

The specific objectives are:

- Knowledge of which biobased waste shells contain the greatest antioxidant properties.
- Extraction of the anticorrosive active ingredient from the biobased shell and chemical characterization.
- Encapsulation of the anticorrosive active ingredient to increase its anticorrosive power.
- Incorporate the corrosion inhibitor additive obtained in a base coating, for paint and as a surface treatment.
- Physicochemical characterization of the formulated anticorrosive coatings.
- Characterization of anticorrosive properties through laboratory tests and accelerated corrosion.
- Transfer of results to the market.
