"FEDER VIBRABOX"

VIBRABOX - RESEARCH ON THE BEHAVIOUR OF BOXES, INTENDED FOR THE TRANSPORT AND STORAGE OF FRUITS AND VEGETABLES, FACING VIBRATIONS AND CLIMATIC CONDITIONS DURING DISTRIBUTION.

DESCRIPTION

Corrugated cardboard packaging is used by virtually all industrial sectors for the handling, transportation, and storage of goods. If we classify packaging materials by type, paper and cardboard represent 35% of the total. Furthermore, sustained growth in demand is expected due to the material's versatility, performance, and sustainability. The main users of corrugated cardboard packaging for product distribution are food companies and retailers of fresh fruits and vegetables.

One of the current problems in packaging fresh fruits and vegetables occurs during distribution, which is carried out in palletized loads. The combination of the load supported by the packaging on the lower levels, along with the vibrations inherent in the transport medium and the temperature and humidity conditions (refrigerated transport and transport in high ambient humidity), generates stresses in the corrugated cardboard structure, causing deformations in the vertical walls of the boxes and their bottoms.

The VIBRABOX project aims to optimize the composition of packaging used for the transport and storage of fresh fruits and vegetables, without compromising their protective capacity during transport operations. This project analyzes the behavior of current packaging used by companies in the Valencian Community during their distribution cycle, focusing on the effects of vibrations to which they are subjected.

OBJECTIVES

The overall objective of the VIBRABOX project is to optimize the composition of packaging used for the transport and storage of fresh fruits and vegetables, without compromising their protective capacity during transport operations. It thus pursues the following overall objectives:

- Reduce the amount of packaging (weight) placed on the market.
- Improve security throughout the logistics cycle to minimize fruit and vegetable waste resulting from incidents during transportation.

As intermediate technical objectives we can highlight:

- The characterization of the behavior of cardboard packaging under distribution climatic conditions (refrigerated product and high humidity conditions).
- Establish a physical-mechanical analysis methodology to validate the suitability of packaging in a full palletized load simulation environment.
- The proposal of guidelines for the design, manufacturing, and configuration of packaging for the transport and storage of fresh fruits and vegetables.
