"FEDER ECO RECEL"

ECO RECEL - ADVANCED ELECTROCHEMISTRY FOR THE RECYCLING OF LIGNOCELLULOSIC WASTE




DESCRIPTION

Progress toward a more sustainable economy requires not only the development of new energy sources, but also the exploration of natural and renewable raw materials that can replace fossil fuels. Along these lines, the ECO-RECEL project focuses on the valorization of lignocellulosic biomass, specifically that derived from pruning residues, as a natural carbon source for the production of high-value-added products.

ECO-RECEL aims to transform this biomass into glucose using clean, low-environmental-impact technologies by integrating electrochemical processes with microwave-assisted thermochemical techniques, enabling efficient and sustainable conversion. This innovative way of utilizing waste and byproducts gives rise to a promising new industrial area: electrochemical biorefinery.

OBJECTIVES

This project aims to develop new electrobiorefinery processes to exploit the full potential of biomass as a source of high-value-added basic chemicals, glucose, nanocellulose, and gluconic and glucaric acids derived from glucose electrooxidation. It also aims to obtain hydrogen as a byproduct in electroforming processes.

To achieve the above objective, the following specific objectives have been set within the project:

- Development of electrocatalysts with 3D titanium supports, modified using electrochemical techniques and doped with NiFe catalysts for the valorization of holocellulosic fractions of lignocellulosic biomass.
- Obtaining a new methodology for valorizing lignocellulosic biomass waste through a three-stage extraction-depolymerization-electroreforming process to obtain high-value-added products.
- Energy recovery from organic-based waste for hydrogen generation.
- Obtaining nanocellulose from virgin fiber residues from pruning Pinus halepensis for use in the paper and coatings industries.
- Obtaining glucose as the main monomer of cellulose and its derivatives gluconic acid and glucaric acid for application in the coatings industry.
- Evaluation of commercial NiFe electrocatalysts in the application of glucose oxidation from holocellulosic biomass to obtain gluconic acid and glucaric acid.
