"FGVA TOX0 - AUTOCOV"

FGVA TOX0 - REDUCTION OF VOCS FROM THE INTERIORS OF CARS AND OTHER MOBILITY PRODUCTS

DESCRIPTION

AIDIMME performs a wide range of VOC emission analyses under standardized conditions, as well as pre-regulatory research and the improvement of chemical analysis for analyte identification. Given that vehicles operate in confined environments, the emission of toxic compounds can have particular relevance to public health. In addition to the VOCs generated during combustion, it is important to understand those due to emissions from vehicle interior components. Having large cameras will allow us to evaluate entire cars and, with the support of small cameras, identify which of their components may have the greatest influence on these emissions. The use of new instantaneous measurement technologies, such as laser, is also planned to be evaluated.

OBJECTIVES

Assessment of VOC emissions inside cars.
Mapping VOC concentrations inside chambers to verify their distribution.
Equivalence of different VOC assessment methods, including laser and HPLC methodology.
Equivalence between the VOC measurement of the entire vehicle and by component.

Project Number: 22500008
Grant Agreement: IMAMCA/2025/2
Duration: From 01/01/2025 to 31/12/2025

Coordinated in AIDIMME by: RODRIGUEZ ABAD, PABLO
R&D Line: MATERIALS TOXICITY

RESULTS OBTAINED

Year 2025: This project analyzed the VOC emissions of three different vehicles, determining that there is a relationship between the vehicle's production year and the level of emissions. That is, the newer the vehicle, the higher its VOC emissions.

To determine the source of these emissions, components of the vehicle's cabin were analyzed. In this case, since it was a camper van, panels of similar material to those found inside were tested, confirming that some of the emissions originated from these raw materials. However, these panels alone do not explain the high emissions observed, so the other materials that make up the cabin would need to be examined.

Finally, an attempt was made to compare the results obtained in the formaldehyde emissions of the different vehicles when using a standard analytical procedure versus other alternative procedures, but their use was ruled out due to their lower sensitivity to low concentrations.
