"FGVA SUR0 - SUR-FA"

FGVA SUR0 - MODIFICATION OF SURFACES MANUFACTURED BY 3D TECHNOLOGY FOR APPLICATION AS ELECTRODES AND MATERIALS IN ELECTROCATALYTIC APPLICATIONS

DESCRIPTION

The FGVA activity in SUR0, SUR-FA, to be developed in 2025, represents a significant advance in obtaining new catalytic materials, through the possibilities offered by additive manufacturing, in terms of generating substrates (Copper, Titanium, Steel and Polyamide) to be functionalized with catalytic materials (Titanium oxides, copper oxides, nickel, tin and silver...)
Using deposition-application and fixation techniques, new materials are obtained for use in oxidation and reduction reactions, with a foreseeable increase in performance due to their enhanced catalytic activity.

OBJECTIVES

The objectives of the project are:

• Development of new catalytic materials through additive manufacturing processes.

• Surface modification of selected substrates using hierarchical nanostructured structures using electrochemical, chemical, thermal techniques or sol-gel templates.

Project Number: 22500007
Grant Agreement: IMAMCA/2025/2
Duration: From 01/01/2025 to 31/12/2025

Coordinated in AIDIMME by: VALERO GOMEZ, ANA Mª
R&D Line: MODIFIED SURFACES

RESULTS OBTAINED

Year 2025: Four different types of porous electrodes have been designed and manufactured using two additive manufacturing technologies, MJF and PBF-EB/M, with polyamide, copper, and titanium as materials. The results show that modifying structures during the design stage allows for the creation of surfaces with different electrocatalytic potentials. Each electrode type has specific characteristics that can be leveraged in various electrocatalytic applications, depending on the required performance in each case.

Furthermore, SUR-FA has validated a methodology for manufacturing porous electrodes using 3D technologies and their subsequent surface modification. This methodology allows for obtaining homogeneous surfaces with a hierarchical porous architecture, which increases their active surface area and, consequently, significantly improves their electrocatalytic efficiency in high-performance applications.
