"SUSPENSE"

SUSPENSE - SUSTAINABLE, SAFE, AND HIGH-PERFORMANCE BIO-BASED ADHESIVES FOR WOOD-BASED COMPOSITES

DESCRIPTION

The SUSPENSE project aims to develop and demonstrate innovative, safe and sustainable bio-based adhesives to replace conventional fossil-based adhesives, which are harmful to the environment and human health. The project focuses on creating adhesives from renewable feedstocks such as bio-acids, polyphenolics, proteins and other bio-derived materials. These adhesives will meet market demands and regulatory standards and will be used in wood-based panels (Plywood, Particle Boards, and MDF), and wood-based insulation materials. The technical performance of the adhesive will be validated through comprehensive industrial testing.

The project consortium comprises 15 partners from 7 different European countries, including 8 RTOs, 5 SMEs, and 2 large companies. The project coordinator is CHIMAR HELLAS SA

OBJECTIVES

Objectives of the project:

- Develop bio-based adhesives from renewable sources eg: bio-acids, polyphenolics, and other bio-based materials. Apply these adhesives to various products, including wood-based panels and insulation materials, and demonstrate that the new products meet diverse market needs.
- Establish and demonstrate production processes for bio-based adhesives that are cost-effective and resource-efficient. Validate the economic viability of these processes through comprehensive technoeconomic analyses, ensuring they are competitive with conventional adhesives.
- Integrate the safe-and-sustainable-by-design (SSbD) framework into the development of adhesives and ensure that the developed adhesives do not release harmful emissions and pose no health and safety risks to manufacturers and end-users.
- Develop bio-based adhesives that offer superior sustainability compared to traditional fossil-based adhesives.
- Increase end-user/consumer awareness and acceptance of bio-based adhesives and circular wood-based panels.
- Demonstrate increased circularity of wood-based composites and develop circularity assessment models and tools to improve the lifecycle of bio-based adhesives.

RESULTS OBTAINED

Year 2026: The project started in October 2025 with the kick-off meeting in Thessaloniki, Greece. AIDIMME attended the meeting and participated in the presentations. The technical work has begun with the identification, sourcing, processing, and synthesis of the raw materials that will make up the bioadhesives. This work is being carried out by several partners. AIDIMME has participated in both the online meetings held to report on the project's progress and the first workshop on SSbD, which took place within the "Sustainability and Regulatory Compliance" work package.
