"FEDER RECILION"

FEDER RECILION - SUSTAINABILITY IN THE RECYCLING OF LITHIUM ION BATTERIES FOR A GREEN TRANSITION

DESCRIPTION

Given the current situation marked by the high price of fossil fuels, high energy demand and the problem of climate change, a significant increase in the demand for energy storage technologies is expected. Among these technologies, lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) stand out, which, thanks to their high energy density, have emerged as a great option to power everything from portable devices to electric vehicles and large-scale energy storage systems.

This increase in demand for lithium-ion batteries must be accompanied by a comprehensive recycling process, with the aim of maximizing the efficiency and sustainability of this process.

The RECILION project represents a significant advance in the field of lithium-ion battery recycling, through the development of innovative technologies, sustainable processes and the generation of knowledge that benefits both companies in the sector and society in general.

OBJECTIVES

The main objective of this project is to develop an innovative and sustainable process for the recovery of critical materials from lithium-ion batteries. The aim is to establish a comprehensive, low-environmental-impact approach that allows for the efficient recovery of both graphite and other non-active components, as well as the metals contained in the active material (cathode) of these batteries, in order to promote the circular economy and reduce the environmental impact associated with the management of this type of waste.

To address and confront this challenge, the RECILION project will focus on the following specific objectives:
•Define the specifications and parameters necessary for the design of the graphite recovery process from the anode and cathode metals to ensure its technical, economic and environmental viability
•Selectively deactivate and dismantle selected cells to obtain the separated electrodes for recycling.
•Design and develop a sustainable process for the recovery of high purity graphite and other non-active components, such as current collectors.
•Design and develop a hydrometallurgical process for the extraction and recovery of critical metals (such as Li, Co, Ni, Mn) from the cathode material present in lithium batteries, based on electrochemical techniques, given the low resource consumption and high performance associated with this type of technology,
•Evaluation of the extraction and recovery performance of metals by the hydrometallurgical process for their subsequent revaluation
•Validate the recycling processes developed through the collaboration of the technological centres, to verify the correct separation of graphite and black mass and test the hydrometallurgical process
•Evaluate the valorisation of extracted metals through the conditioning and reformulation of cathode material precursors that allow the reintroduction of extracted materials into new batteries.
•Evaluate the performance of recycled graphite and reformulated cathode containing metals from the hydrometallurgical recycling process, as a material for the manufacture of lithium battery components.
