"THE NORTHEST FEDER" FEDER NOUSTEST-INVESTIGATION OF THE RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN THE NEW S-TEST AND TRADITIONAL PAPER COMPRESSION TEST AND ITS APPLICATION TO OPTIMIZE CORRUGATED CARDBOARD DESCRIPTION Corrugated cardboard packaging accounts for 36% of global use compared to other materials and its market is expected to increase by 5% between 2024 and 2032. Furthermore, according to the Spanish Association of Packaging Manufacturers (AFCO), the Valencian Community is one of the drivers of growth in the sector, with its use in companies producing and marketing fresh fruit and vegetables standing out. Other sectors established in the Valencian Community that use this material are the ceramic, automotive, paint and varnish, and traditional furniture and toy sectors. Corrugated cardboard is made up of a combination of flat and corrugated papers. Corrugated papers, the main raw material for corrugated cardboard, are evaluated with widely known strength tests such as the CMT and CCT, which are laborious, and with the SCT. A method has recently been developed that may be an alternative to the CMT. This method is the S-Test, for which there are very few publications, and it is a little-known test, especially for SMEs, with the risk of being left behind in the characterization of corrugated papers, if this test is imposed quickly, as everything seems to indicate. For all the above reasons, the NOUSTEST project aims to carry out an exhaustive study to investigate the relationship between the results of the usual CMT, CCT and SCT tests and the S-Test values, considering different qualities of fluting paper, different wave profiles and environmental conditions. The results obtained from this project will allow companies to determine the quality of the method, whether it can be an alternative to traditional tests, and to have reliable data that will enable the classification and evaluation of papers with the S-Test. OBJECTIVES The general objective of the NOUSTEST project is to find relationships between the new corrugated paper characterisation test S-Test and the traditional tests (CMT, CCT and SCT) used by companies for this purpose, with the ultimate goal of optimising the properties of corrugated cardboard and thus the packaging manufactured with it. The achievement of the general objective involves obtaining the following specific objectives: •The exhaustive and updated characterization of the corrugating papers used in the manufacture of corrugated cardboard, using traditional tests of flat compressive strength CMT, edge compressive strength CCT and short-term compressive strength SCT. • Obtaining reliable data on S-Test values ​​for a wide range of corrugating papers, which allows for a historical record of data that companies currently lack, both under standard and high humidity conditions.
