"FEDER ADHELIG"

FEDER ADHELIG-DEVELOPMENT OF LIGNIN BIOADHESIVES FOR WOOD FROM PINUS HALEPENSIS WASTE FROM THE VALENCIAN COMMUNITY

DESCRIPTION

ADHELIG is a project focused on promoting the wood sector in the Valencian Community with the development of new lignin bioadhesives from the synergistic perspective of process innovation combined with sustainability derived from the best use of native natural resources. The abundance and wide extension of the conifer species Pinus Halepensis throughout the entire territory of the Valencian Community, together with its low value from a wood perspective, make its surpluses a potential source of secondary lignocellulosic resources that can be valued in a context of circular bioeconomy and incentives for less favoured rural activities.
The project supports the valorisation of forest residue as a sustainable and economic source of lignins rich in G-type monolignols obtained with the support of emerging liquid-solid extraction technologies based on the use of low-melting solvents (DES, Deep Eutectic Solvents). DESs, which stand out for their tailor-made formulation, reduced toxicity and recyclability, have also been shown to have a special affinity for the lignin structure, which increases the efficiency of the extraction process, reduces the risk of secondary condensation reactions and facilitates fragmentation.
From this combined perspective of raw material plus process, the project hopes to isolate new, more reactive structural variants of lignin to achieve phenol-formaldehyde lignoresins with high degrees of lignin vs. phenol substitution that achieve the market performance required for their application in plywood and veneered boards.

OBJECTIVES

The general objective of the ADHELIG project is to investigate the potential of forest residues of Pinus halepensis as an indigenous, sustainable and renewable natural resource of more reactive lignins, applicable to the development of new bioadhesives with improved properties that can be exploited by companies in the wood sector of the Valencian Community.
The specific objectives would be:

- Valorization of Pinus halepensis waste as a source of the raw material lignin.

- Development of new effective and sustainable lignin extraction methodologies.

- Formulation of lignin-derived phenol-formaldehyde bioadhesives.

- Validation of adhesives for the production of plywood and veneered boards.

RESULTS OBTAINED

Year 2025: Final results obtained:

New structural variants of lignin extracted from pruning residues of Pinus halepensis, native to the Valencian Community, have been isolated and identified using an emerging technology consisting of extractions performed with DES (Deep Euthetic Solvents). The extracted native lignins are characterized by higher purity than commercial lignins, as well as improved solubility. Furthermore, they have been shown to be lignins rich in G-type monolignols, which present lower steric hindrance and therefore may be more reactive.

ADHELIG's new lignins have been used in the formulation of polyvinyl acetate (PVA) adhesives, with the aim of obtaining more environmentally friendly adhesives. The bioadhesives developed have shown good adhesion, with up to 10% greater surface peel strength than the commercial lignin-free product.

The lignin obtained in the ADHELIG project has also been analyzed for the synthesis of bioadhesives with nontoxic aldehydes from natural sources, with the goal of obtaining phenolic adhesives made from 100% natural lignin. The products thus obtained, although with lower adhesion than synthetic phenolic adhesives, showed promising adhesive behavior, which encourages continued research into other natural aldehydes and process parameters (P and T) in future projects.
