"FEDER SYNERGY"

FEDER SYNERGY-DEVELOPMENT OF ACTIVE SURFACES AGAINST NOSOCOMIAL PATHOGENIC MICROORGANISMS USING SYNERGIC BIOCIDES

DESCRIPTION

Healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) are currently one of the most significant problems in the global public health field. These infections, which generally manifest themselves more than 72 hours after a patient is admitted to a hospital, have a high incidence in intensive care units (ICUs), where patients are especially vulnerable. HAIs are caused by more than 40 species of pathogenic microorganisms, including bacteria, fungi and viruses, whose proliferation is aggravated by the growing resistance to multiple antibiotics, which limits the available therapeutic options. This situation generates a direct negative impact on hospital mortality and leads to a significant increase in associated healthcare costs.
One of the main sources of transmission of these microorganisms are fomites, that is, surfaces and objects present in the hospital environment that can act as passive vectors. Common examples include handles, railings, trolleys, windows and walls, which have a high capacity to host and transfer pathogens between individuals, whether they are healthcare personnel or patients.
In response to this problem, it is imperative to develop innovative and efficient antimicrobial coatings that allow reducing the microbial load on these surfaces. This project aims to obtain a high-performance antimicrobial coating to be applied to critical fomites within the hospital environment. In an innovative way, the exploration of synergies between inorganic and/or natural active compounds is proposed in order to enhance the antimicrobial efficacy of the developed material.

OBJECTIVES

Develop surfaces with advanced antimicrobial properties against nosocomial pathogenic microorganisms responsible for healthcare-associated infections (HAIs). The project focuses on the use of synergistic biocides for application in hospital environments, thus contributing to mitigating the spread, in this case of pathogenic bacteria.
The project will focus on the development of water-based polymeric formulations that can be easily applied and reapplied in situ on already finished and in-use surfaces, in order to provide protection and maintenance against the spread of pathogenic microorganisms. These formulations will be specifically designed for application on fomites of clinical furniture, both metallic and lignocellulosic supports.

RESULTS OBTAINED

Year 2025: During the execution of the SYNERGY project, an antimicrobial coating has been developed for application on finished sanitary furniture. This coating is the result of a series of advancements achieved throughout the project.

First, encapsulated natural extracts with antimicrobial activity against nosocomial organisms were obtained. Subsequently, synergies between these natural extracts and synthetic biocides were identified, which significantly enhanced their effectiveness against these microorganisms.

From these synergistic combinations, stable solutions have been formulated, which have been additively applied to surfaces intended for sanitary use.
