"METALLIC"

HIGH QUALITY AND LOW COST METAL MEDICAL IMPLANTS THROUGH EFFICIENT ADDITIVE MANUFACTURING

DESCRIPTION

METALIC aims to reformulate standards and propose solutions with more affordable operating costs for the Health sector. Using PBF-LB/M technology, it develops a manufacturing process for Ti6Al4V-ELI material, both in fine powder (d10 of 15µm and d90 of 53µm) and larger powders (d10 of 45µm and d90 of 105µm), for complex and effectively tailored geometries. METALIC improves productivity, which has been slowed down until now, by alleviating the residual stresses and high rigidity caused by the processing of Titanium. This project is aimed at the Health sector and specifically, it is expected to be able to develop a prototype capable of manufacturing custom-made medical devices. This includes cleaning and sterilization studies, as well as in vitro and in vivo tests and finally a sustainability study of the process.

AIDIMME, SAMYLABS and the Valencia General Hospital Research Foundation FIHGUV, join forces and extensive experience to meet the objectives of METALIC supported by funds from the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities managed by the State Innovation Agency whose main purpose is to accelerate the incorporation of knowledge and scientific-technical results marked in the project that allow the validation and development of this new technology.

OBJECTIVES

The overall objective of the project is to develop a powder bed additive manufacturing technology (PBF-LB/M) for processing in the Ti6Al4V-ELI material, effectively manufacturing complex and customized geometries to obtain implants and medical instruments in an efficient and sustainable way. To achieve this, the following specific objectives are set:

- Carry out innovative developments on low-cost PBF-LB/M technology that enable meeting the demanding requirements for manufacturing custom implants and instruments in Ti64-Eli, complying with health sector standards, including the adaptation of the equipment software.

- Development of process conditions so that larger particle size (PSD) powder than conventional powder can be used for biomedical applications, the cost of which is considered lower.

- Development of advanced Ti64-Eli melting strategies to avoid possible necessary heat treatments.

- Development of a design methodology based on FEM for supports, parts, manufacturing orientation, etc.

- Development of clinically relevant demonstration cases following the Design and Manufacturing Protocol for personalized medical devices and implants.

- Biocompatibility and osseointegration studies of Ti64-Eli medical implants and instruments created with the proposed technology.

- Sustainability study that allows comparing the PBF-LB/M technological solution developed in the project with other conventional solutions on the market.
