"HARWASTING"

REVALORIZATION OF HARVESTED AGROFOREST BIOMASS WASTE AS FEEDSTOCKS FOR ADD-VALUED BIO-BASED SOLUTIONS FOR A GREEN DEVELOPMENT

DESCRIPTION

HarWASTing aims to develop innovative business models based on circular economy (CE) principles to promote bioeconomy in rural areas, by implementing a set of scalable and replicable technological solutions to efficiently exploit underutilized biomass from forestry and agriculture to develop innovative and high-value products. These models will support sustainable management practices and will promote an efficient use of natural resources, reducing overall waste generation and post-harvest losses by implementing valorization processes and fostering CE principles.
To this end, a methodology will be implemented to collect, treat and revalorize biomass from forest and agricultural harvest, pruning waste and bioethanol process side-streams, respecting the cascade principle for biomass use. A one-fits-all technology, Hydrothermal Carbonization, for a higher energy efficient treatment of lignocellulosic biomass residues will be combined with Pressurized Hot Water Extraction and innovative post-treatment technologies, to develop high-value added products and avoid any non-valorized side-stream. The whole concept will be demonstrated at small-scale pilot, built-upon existing wood, food and bioenergy value chains to further strengthen their economic and environmental sustainability through synergistic interlinkages between them. Mediterranean, Boreal and Continental bioregions will be studied.
The holistic concept is based on the central valorization route of HTC and its solid product, hydrochar, that is converted into hybrid wood-hydrochar panels with less than 10% of bio-adhesive for special applications such as fire protection or electromagnetic shielding. A novel support AI-based digital tool for forecasting agroforest feedstock availability will be developed. Innovative digital passports will help to commercialize the panels and bioadhesives. The hydrochar will be offered on a new digital platform which also serves for networking and for publishing of best-practices.

OBJECTIVES

HarWASTing proposes to turn LCB from diverse feedstocks into a biomass commodity product consisting of refined hydrochar through chemical and physical dehydration. Biomass producers or owners will be engaged by a new BMs for the biomass processing plant. In addition, a new value cycle will transform refined hydrochar into a carbon sink as hybrid wood panels, using bio-adhesives based on activated lignin or tannin obtained other side streams such as bark and fermentation residues to make them 100% fossil free. Leverage will be achieved through the implementation of a Digital Product Passport, a digital tool to qualify and quantify potentially available biomass using remote sensing data and artificial intelligence (AI) for accurate forecasting, a collaborative digital platform and multiple mini-stimuli supported by Cascade Funding.

To achieve this objective, 5 specific objectives (SOs) have been defined and related with corresponding outputs (OUT), exploitable results (ER) and work packages (WP) where they will be addressed mainly.

SO1. To develop two new BMs, build-upon existing EU food, feed and bioenergy value chains from 2 different EU deprived and depopulated rural regions located in 2 EU bioregions (Boreal and Mediterranean), with an active role of primary producers.
SO1.1: To improve innovation capacities and product portfolio extension in primary production sectors by diversifying and enhancing incomes derived from current rejected/burnt agroforest waste.

SO2. To scale up and demonstrate in small-scale bio-based pilots, technical, environmental and economic feasibility along the studied value cycles of several biomass waste treatment technologies and high-value solutions using underutilized and side streams agroforest biomass as feedstock
SO2.1: Sustainable, zero-waste extraction of tannins to be used in 100% biobased adhesives.
SO2.2: Lignin with improved reactivity and 100% renewable bio-adhesives with >75% lignin content.
SO2.3: To implement a value cycle involving HTC/post-treatment, producing hybrid panels (wood-hydrochar) for special applications in the construction sector in a technical and economic manner.
SO2.4: Revalorized liquid fraction from HTC process as fertilizer (rich in K) and irrigation water.

SO3. To improve the knowledge on the quantitative and qualitative requirements of feedstock, harvesting or logistics and process parameters of pre-treatment, treatment and post-treatment processes
SO3.1: Digital Product Passport for innovative products developed including biogenic carbon.

SO4. To facilitate the knowledge of available biomass feedstock from agriculture and forestry.
SO4.1: A cloud-based digital tool to qualify and quantify potential availability of biomass waste from agriculture and forestry, using remote sensing data and artificial intelligence (AI) for accurate prediction.

SO5. Closely interact with other projects under this topic and create a joint stakeholder platform to promote best-practice use cases for primary producers & SMEs, promoting policy guidelines for CAP & MMEE.
SO5.1: A collaborative digital platform for knowledge exchange and marketplace for LCB and hydrochar.
