"FGVA SOUTH0 - CORCLIM"

FGVA SUR0 - CORCLIM - DURABILITY OF COATINGS AS A FUNCTION OF AGGRESSIVENESS AGAINST CORROSION IN DIFFERENT NATIONAL AREAS

DESCRIPTION

Corrosion is a typical defect of metal surfaces due to the oxidation process. To reduce this effect and increase the durability of materials, metal parts are coated as a protection method. Even so, the deterioration of the material depends to a large extent on the environmental conditions to which the product is exposed.

The different aggressiveness of the area is due to different corrosive agents such as temperature, humidity, pH, exposure time, sulfates, chlorides, among others. But there is not such a specific knowledge of their influences as to predict behavior of the coatings, being, therefore, difficult to select the appropriate product on each occasion.

For this reason, the CORCLIM project aims to develop a corrosivity map for steel and zinc, which consists of selecting different areas of Spain and determining the existing corrosion parameters in each of them, calculating, based on these parameters, the category of corrosivity depending on each area.

It is also intended to relate a standardized test with the different categories of corrosivity, in order to simulate, approximately in the laboratory, the advance of corrosion in a given area during the first year of exposure. In this way, tests can be carried out on different coatings in order to select the most appropriate depending on where it is to be installed.

OBJECTIVES

The general objectives are, on the one hand, to obtain a map of Spain with the corrosivity category classification of different areas based on their corrosion speed, and on the other, to find a standardized test to simulate the progress of corrosion, during the first year of exposure, of steel and zinc, depending on the corresponding corrosivity category. So that the most appropriate metallic base material and coating could be chosen in each case, depending on the place where it is going to be installed.

To achieve this main objective, the specific ones are:

- Carry out a bibliographic and regulatory study to determine the variables of influence on the corrosivity of the different environments, as well as the classification of the different existing corrosivity categories.

- Select search sources for said variables, expressed in the appropriate units.

- Collect these variables for different areas of Spain, both urban and industrial.

- Calculate the corrosion rate of each of these areas in Spain and classify them based on the existing Corrosivity Categories.

- Obtain a corrosivity map of Spain.

- Select and adapt standardized tests, applied to steel and zinc, that allow the theoretical corrosion rates to be experimentally reproduced when the materials are exposed to environments with different corrosivity categories.

- To study the behavior against corrosion of steel and zinc, experimentally, by carrying out the adjusted standardized test, to simulate its behavior during the first year of exposure.

RESULTS OBTAINED

Year 2023: In the CORCLIM project, the urban and industrial areas of the Iberian Peninsula have been selected, as well as the Valencian Community as a whole. The map with these selected areas has served as a starting point for geostatistical analyzes using satellites, necessary to determine the most influential atmospheric factors in the corrosion process. These variables are temperature, relative humidity, sulfur dioxide (SO2) and chlorides (Cl-). Chlorides are found both deposited in the ground and in the form of aerosols. It is a particularly complicated parameter to determine, which is why a collaboration contract has been made with the Higher Council for Scientific Research (CSIC). Next, a map of each of the variables of interest has been generated: temperature, relative humidity, sulfur dioxide and chlorides, in executable GIS format. From this information, the corrosion rate of steel and zinc has been determined for one year of exposure. The corrosion maps obtained have been configured with information on the corrosion categories determined in the selected areas. In the results, it is observed that the main existing corrosion categories for steel and zinc are C2, C3 and C4. In the steel corrosion map, category C2 is the most widespread; Category C3 also stands out on the Mediterranean coast, Andalusia and northern Spain; and category C4 is located on the coast of Galicia, where the corrosion parameters measured are more aggressive than in the rest of the Iberian Peninsula. On the other hand, in the zinc corrosion map, it is observed that the coastal areas of C3 are more extensive than in the case of steel, which means that, for the same environmental conditions and the same exposure time, zinc will have a Higher corrosion rate than steel and therefore will deteriorate sooner. Category C2 is concentrated in inland areas, and C4, as in the steel map, is located on the Galician coast. Regarding the laboratory simulation, the climatic cycles have been adjusted to simulate the corrosion categories. In the case of steel, it has been possible to obtain categories C1, C2, C3 and C4; but for zinc only C4 and C3 have been reproduced, with the minimum number of cycles. Therefore, the method used would be optimal for the simulation of steel, but it is not convenient to use it for zinc.
