"FGVA MAT0 - COMPMIC"

FGVA MAT0 - COMPMIC - IMPROVEMENT OF KNOWLEDGE OF THE BEHAVIOR OF MATERIALS AGAINST MICROORGANISMS: BACTERIA, FUNGI AND VIRUSES

DESCRIPTION

In recent years, the study, control and investigation of biocide efficacy has increased, both for bacteria and for fungi and viruses. In the case of viruses and, to a lesser extent, fungi and bacteria, the results may not be as reliable as desired, making it difficult to formulate products with high biocide efficacy, forcing costly reformulation and experimentation. and time and, even, a certain insecurity when the product is placed on the market. The effectiveness of any biocide product depends not only on its actual effectiveness, but also on other external factors, such as the correct distribution on the chosen substrate, the load of microorganisms present in the medium, as well as the environmental conditions in which it is seen. exposed surface to be disinfected.

The COMPMIC project seeks to deepen their knowledge regarding how to combat these microorganisms in materials and products commonly used in homes.

OBJECTIVES

The general objective of the project is to develop disinfectant cleaning formulations for domestic use, whose composition does not contain or minimizes substances considered dangerous and worrisome according to the legislation, but whose efficacy and durability are high against bacteria, fungi and viruses.

The specific objectives are:

- Study the different parameters involved in the analysis of the efficacy of biocides against these microorganisms and their influence on the result, in order to propose a reliable study that helps to formulate, and reformulate, products with high biocide efficacy, with a broad spectrum of action and reliable throughout its production.

- Study the incorporation of biocides, either natural or formulated free of substances classified as dangerous, with the consequent verification of their effectiveness.

- Expand the activity and the catalog of microbiological tests, specifically, for tests of antiseptic products and chemical disinfectants for regular use in homes.

RESULTS OBTAINED

Year 2023: Firstly, the biocidal capacity of a series of concentrated extracts obtained from garden waste and agricultural pruning remains from the Valencian Community, and other acquired materials of inorganic origin, was studied. For the extraction of the active substances present in the biomass, the Soxhlet solid-liquid extraction technique, easy to scale, and low-toxicity solvents, was used. The inhibition zones of these extracts were evaluated by diffusion assays in plates sown in depth against the species A.brasiliensis, S. aureus and E.coli. The extract referenced as MA-F presented an interesting inhibitory capacity against all the species tested. The characterization of the natural extracts by CG-MS chromatography identified the presence of numerous compounds, mainly fatty acyls, nitrogenous compounds, monoterpenes, carbonic esters and saturated hydrocarbons. Subsequently, formulations of disinfectants for domestic use were developed to which natural compounds were incorporated, either purchased or obtained through solid-liquid extractions. The disinfectants were formulated with ethanol, water, surfactants or surfactants, and the natural biocides, added to different proportions, achieving stable formulations using up to 10% biocide. It was observed that the incorporation of natural extracts referenced as MA-F, MA-H and SA-H improved the spectrum of antimicrobial activity compared to a reference disinfectant, under clean conditions, at a temperature of 24°C and after 5 min contact time for bacteria, and 15 minutes contact time for fungi (UNE-EN 13697:2015+A1 on chemical antiseptics and disinfectants). It is concluded that biomass waste is a source of active substances with biocidal potential, and a sustainable alternative for the formulation of disinfection products for the home.
