DESCRIPTION

Resources are vital to the economy and are essential to the operation and integrity of industrial systems. However, certain types of raw materials (critical raw materials) present a high supply risk, either due to their high degree of geographical concentration or due to the growth of global competition. To ensure the supply of these raw materials, it is necessary to diversify the supply from both primary and secondary sources, reducing dependence on third countries and improving the efficiency of resources and promoting the circularity of the system.

Electrical and electronic products are very complex systems that include many parts, parts, and components. These products can contain more than 60 different materials including critical raw materials such as heavy metals or rare earths. These materials confer a high value to the product when it becomes waste, so recovery is considered a form of urban mining.

The list of materials contained in the product can give an idea of ​​the economic and environmental importance of its recycling/recovery, but this information must be safe and reliable. However, complete information on the amount of raw materials contained in the product is currently lacking.

The element that could provide the necessary methodology to obtain and structure the information is the digital product passport. Therefore, it is confirmed as a way to implement the Circular Economy, since it promotes the closure of material cycles, while offering a unique identification of the product.

OBJECTIVES

The project aims to develop a methodology for assessing the sustainability of electrical and electronic products for inclusion in the product passport. The methodology will take into account the characterization of the products, the incorporation of the sustainability factor through the integration of different environmental indices and the availability of existing techniques and technologies for the recycling, recovery and valorization of critical raw materials.
