"H2GREEN"

H2GREEN - PRODUCTION OF GREEN H2 THROUGH SOLAR ELECTRO-PHOTOCATALYSIS

DESCRIPTION

The non-dependence on fossil fuels is one of the greatest challenges of our society, increasingly technological and globalized, where transport and communications mark its progress. That is why the search for new viable and efficient alternatives for a fuel with the least possible environmental impact based on renewable sources, with autonomy and efficiency, is one of the main priorities in the policies of any industrialized country. In addition, the decontamination and/or recovery of industrial liquid effluents loaded with organic matter or volatile organic compounds is also one of the greatest environmental challenges faced by industries.

In this sense, H2GREEN aims to provide a solution to these two great challenges through the production of green hydrogen through solar photoelectrocatalysis and the elimination of industrial discharges contaminated with organic compounds.

OBJECTIVES

The main objective of the project is the development of different high-efficiency photoelectrocatalysts for the production of hydrogen as a clean energy source from aqueous solutions of organic compounds. In this way, it is intended to solve a double industrial challenge in the same process: production of clean energy and degradation of organic pollutants from industrial discharges through their energy recovery, all from renewable resources such as sunlight.
To do this, AIDIMME is going to develop at least one nanostructured photoanode and photocathode doped with transition metal oxides capable of working in the visible range, improving hydrogen production

Project Number: 22200060
Grant Agreement: IMDEEA / 2022/52
Duration: From 01/07/2022 to 30/09/2023

Coordinated in AIDIMME by: VALERO GOMEZ, ANA Mª
R&D Line: CIRCULAR ECONOMY

RESULTS OBTAINED

Year 2023: In the H2GREEN project, more than 24 photoanodes and as many high-efficiency photocathodes and cathodes have been obtained, for use in the photoreforming processes of organic products and hydrogen production, in photoelectrochemical cells, fed with UV light close to the visible. In the case of the photoanode, the best results obtained were with those developed on a titanium base through additive manufacturing using the PBF-EB process and electrochemically and thermally treated, called TT800 with and without nickel as a dopant. In the case of the cathodes, those that presented the best results were the copper-based ones also manufactured using PBF-EB and electrochemically modified, called Cu_Ox_550. To test its effectiveness, 6 wastes from different industries have been treated in the project, such as agri-food, construction, paper industry or the biofuels sector. It has been proven that two of them double the production of hydrogen in a photoelectrochemical process and two others maintain their production. Furthermore, in all of them it has been possible to observe their potential recovery/treatment as by-products after the tests carried out.
