"FGVA - SOUTH ENCLOSURE"

ENCLOSURE - DEVELOPMENT OF INTELLIGENT COVERINGS THAT CONTRIBUTE TO ENERGY SAVING AND ENVIRONMENTAL IMPROVEMENT

DESCRIPTION

This research focuses on the study of intelligent coatings that contribute to energy savings and environmental improvement.
Energy efficiency in buildings is one of the strategic priorities of the European Union to achieve climate neutrality in 2050. To achieve this, measures must be promoted to renovate buildings and reduce energy consumption and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. . By 2033, existing homes in Europe must achieve a minimum energy classification of E and D on a scale from A to G, and new buildings must eliminate emissions from 2028.

Residential construction requires extensive rehabilitation. To this end, coatings with materials that allow energy cost savings, together with the use of materials and a reduction in the carbon footprint, will help achieve effective renovation and can contribute to meeting climate and energy objectives.

OBJECTIVES

This project deepens the knowledge of intelligent or advanced coatings that allow savings in energy consumption, along with the use of materials and a reduction in the carbon footprint, mainly characterized by:
- A positive contribution to energy efficiency through specific refractory pigments, insulating ceramic or glass spheres.
- The absorption capacity of VOCs through basic compounds that absorb CO2.
All this knowledge will be quantified by developing and carrying out specific tests that allow the coatings to be characterized in their response to thermal and chemical attacks.

RESULTS OBTAINED

Year 2022: Work was carried out in two main lines, analyzing/researching coatings that are capable of interacting with different external agents, to improve the energy efficiency and comfort of homes. A.-) Coatings that have a thermal conductivity that improves the thermal inertia of the surface of the home and B.-) Coatings with the capacity to absorb VOCs, which contribute to reducing the carbon footprint, were studied.
The results obtained in each line of research were the following:
A.-) Thermal insulating coatings. Coatings for interior and exterior use were studied, on the one hand, both basic and additives for interaction with external temperature. With the formulations, different thicknesses were applied on a calcium fibrosilicate support (a support usually used to make it universal in scope). It has been concluded that the property of the coating film that most influences the heating of the material and the enclosure in which it is located is the reflectivity of its surface. Likewise, the effect of the temperature increase delay improves the higher the application weight (from 700 µm to 1.000 µm). In thermal conductivity, no significant differences have been detected between paints, and given the low thicknesses applied (maximum 1.000 µm), their insulating contribution is not relevant.
B.-) Coatings with VOC absorption capacity. Coatings with CO2 capture technology for interior and exterior use have been studied, as well as those same coatings without the collectors. Samples with different grammages applied on an inert substrate, calcium fibrosilicate, have been tested and the decrease in CO2 concentration has been evaluated in an airtight chamber, during drying/curing and once this process is completed (7 and 30 days). It is verified that during the drying process a high reduction of CO2 takes place in the coatings added with calcium hydroxide compared to the coatings without additives. This behavior is no longer evident after 7 days from its application, although the decrease in CO2 continues at a slower uptake rate, similar to that of non-additivated products. It is considered that this slight decrease is due to the absorption capacity of the support, calcium fibrosilicate. Regarding the applied weight, during the first hours of drying an increase in CO2 capture performance is observed at higher applied thicknesses, which is minimized over time.
