"LIFE WASTE2COAG"

LIFE WASTE2COAG - BRINE AND METAL WASTE VALORIZATION TO PRODUCE COAGULANTS FOR WASTEWATER TREATMENT

DESCRIPTION

Reverse osmosis (RO) and ion exchange (IE) are perceived as viable and feasible solutions to address freshwater scarcity through seawater desalination and wastewater reuse, and to provide quality water for industrial processes (automotive, food and beverage, pharmaceutical, etc.). In RO and IE, the feedwater is separated into two streams: water and high-salinity brines, which are typically treated as waste. There are an estimated 15.906 desalination plants (DPs) in operation worldwide, generating around 142 million m3/day of brines. The European Union (EU) and Spain account for 9,2% and 5,7% of the total installations, respectively.
Most brines are discharged into the environment without treatment through sewage discharge, deep well injection, evaporation ponds, and land application or wastewater treatment plants.
Furthermore, the growing demand for metals has led to resource shortages, rising prices, and environmental impacts stemming from both demand and the unsustainable management of metal waste. The EU produces only about 3% of the raw materials needed to sustain the growing demand for metals.
Solutions are needed that embrace a new model of resource efficiency and a circular economy, based on the valorization of brines and metal waste to produce coagulants for wastewater treatment and contribute to environmental protection.
The electrolytic technology to be applied is operated with renewable energy, turning the process into a completely sustainable process based on the use of waste as raw materials and renewable energy.

OBJECTIVES

The general objective of the project is the demonstration of an innovative and cost-effective technology based on waste electrolysis to produce coagulants for the removal of contaminants in wastewater, including contaminants and emerging pathogens. The coagulant concentration will be modified on demand, as well as the chemical nature of the inorganic salt with a simple reversal of polarity to obtain different product formulations. These products will be applied to ensure high quality effluents in urban and industrial WWTPs.

Likewise, metal waste from industrial scrap and brines generated in various industries, including wastewater treatment plants and sewage treatment plants, will be recovered. The project promotes the circular economy in wastewater treatment plants and creates synergies with other sectors. Electrolysis will be applied under conditions of maximum efficiency, using renewable energy, thanks to the use of highly conductive waste, promoting sustainability.
