DESCRIPTION

This project focuses mainly on the experimental development of a possible alternative method for the sub-stage of polymeric material biting, prior to the deposition of metals, by chemical route, on these materials. This experimental development will be based on using an advanced oxidation process, such as Atmospheric Plasma, to modify the surface of the polymers, studying later how this process affects the characteristics of the resulting coatings (mainly adhesion) with respect to those obtained by existing classical methods.

OBJECTIVES

General objectives:

- Development of an alternative process for the chemical biting stage with chromic acid in Cu / Ni / Cr electrodeposition processes on plastic polymers, mainly ABS and ABS / PC, with improved adhesion properties with respect to traditional biting.

- Evaluation of the incidence of the modification of parameters of the conventional metal electrodeposition process, on the adhesion properties of the coatings obtained.


Specific objectives:

- Generate mordanting on the surface of plastic polymers, as an alternative to the conventional chemical process with chromic acid, with the objective of eliminating, as far as possible, the industrial use of chromic acid, harmful to health and the environment.
- Relate the previous metallic coatings with other factors such as current, time, temperature, electrolyte, etc. when they are obtained by the traditional industrial process.
- Obtain a battery of procedures that allow us to perform the characterization of both types of coatings (obtained by traditional methodology and substituting the stage of chemical etching by atmospheric plasma attack) in a repetitive, reproducible manner and with known uncertainties.
- Influencing the production and characterization system of metallic coatings, Valencian, so that it can innovate in the process of metal electrodeposition controlling the characteristics of experimental coatings.
- Transfer to the collaborating companies the knowledge derived from the study carried out during the project, to help improve the productive fabric of the Valencian Community.

RESULTS OBTAINED

Year 2020: During the development of this project, the programmed tasks have been carried out to achieve the initially proposed technical objectives. Regarding the new development of etching on plastic (ABS and / or ABS / PC) with application of atmospheric plasma, it has been found that the plasma etching conditions used do not allow the subsequent galvanic coating stages. For these metallic coatings to be deposited, it is necessary that, previously, the substrate is activated by means of the colloidal palladium anchor. The morphologies obtained with the plasma used do not allow this activation of palladium, although they have a roughness that initially seems to be a good base for the application of other types of coatings. On the other hand, a battery of procedures has been developed that allow the characterization of the metallic Cu / Ni / Cr coatings in a repetitive, reproducible way and with traceability to the International Measurement System (SI) that guarantees the quality of the measurements made. .
