RECORD - DEVELOPMENT OF HIGH GENERATION ANTI-CORROSIVE PERFORMANCE COATINGS

DESCRIPTION

AIDIMME together with the Powder Technology Group of UC3M and the company PINTURAS ISAVAL, SL are developing coatings with high anticorrosive performance through the R + D + i project: DEVELOPMENT OF HIGH PERFORMANCE ANTI-CORROSIVE PERFORMANCES OF NEW GENERATION, RECORD.

OBJECTIVES

Through the three years of development, it is intended to address and achieve different coatings with different properties / applications, which will mean for the ISAVAL company to be able to position itself competitively with new developments in the high performance coatings sector.

Project Number: 21580018
Grant Agreement: RTC-2015-3513-5
Duration: From 01/01/2015 to 30/06/2019

Coordinated in AIDIMME by: BOSCH MOSSI, FRANCISCO
R&D Line: TO BE DETERMINED

RESULTS OBTAINED

Year 2019: During 2018, the optimization of the formulation of the anticorrosive coating developed during previous years of the same has continued.
The coating has a double action: the base coating presents protection based on the barrier effect, since it prevents the diffusion of oxidizing species towards the surface of the metallic material. On the other hand, the built-in anticorrosives prevent oxidation of the base metal through different mechanisms. During the previous years, the precursors were selected, as well as the anticorrosives to be used in the formulation.
During 2018, tests have been carried out with different types of resin to try to improve the performance of the coatings obtained. During this year, the rest of the components that a commercial paint incorporates have also been incorporated: antifoams, dispersants, anticrater, bleaching agents, inorganic fillers, etc. During the optimization phase, compatibility problems have appeared between some of the components used industrially and the base formulation, which caused the appearance of blisters or blisters in the coatings obtained. For this reason, during 2018 the proportions of the components have been optimized to avoid the appearance of these defects in the coating.
Corrosion resistance has been measured using electrochemical techniques in a highly aggressive medium such as seawater (3.5% NaCl). The electrochemical techniques used have been electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, polarization curves and electrochemical frequency modulation. Using these techniques, an increase in the electrical resistance of four orders of magnitude of the painted system has been observed when compared to the base metal. In the case of the measured corrosion current density, there is a decrease in it of around 4 orders of magnitude. Therefore, the incorporation of the coating decreases the corrosion rate of the painted steel by about 10000 times compared to the base metal. Conventional paint systems usually have three layers (primer, paint and finish) which produces a thickness greater than 200 µm. In the developed system, the improvement of 4 orders of magnitude is obtained with a single coating and a single application which produces a thickness of less than 90 µm. Therefore, there is room for improvement both by increasing the thickness of the coating and by incorporating other layers (finish, etc.)
