formaldehyde emissions

AIDIMME is accredited in accordance with UNE-EN ISO/IEC 17025 to carry out emission and formaldehyde content tests according to standards UNE-EN 717-1, UNE-EN ISO 12460-3 (which replaces the UNE-EN 717-2), UNE-EN ISO 12460-5 (perforator method, which replaces UNE-EN 120), ASTM E1333 and ASTM D6007.

Other evaluations of formaldehyde emissions are also carried out according to the standards UNE-EN 16516, ISO 16000-3, UNE-EN 717-3, JIS A 1460, UNE-EN ISO 12460-4 and UNE-EN 1243.

In addition, AIDIMME is a notified body as a testing laboratory (evaluation system 3) to perform formaldehyde tests according to the requirements established in the harmonized product standards:

  • EN 13986. Boards derived from wood for use in construction.
  • EN 14041. Resilient, textile and laminate floor coverings.
  • EN 14904. Sports surfaces. Indoor multisport flooring.
  • EN 14342. Wood and parquet floors.
  • EN 438-7. Decorative high pressure laminates (HPL).
  • EN 13964. Suspended ceilings.

Emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOC)

AIDIMME performs various test methods to determine the emissions of volatile organic compounds in indoor environments.

At an international level, the method for measuring VOC emissions from construction and furniture products is described in the UNE-EN ISO 16000-9 standard, and in other standards of the same family such as ISO 16000-3, UNE- ISO 16000-6 and UNE-EN ISO 16000-11.

In the European context, the reference standard for determining emissions into indoor air is UNE-EN 16516, which complements the test conditions of the international VOC measurement standards.

formaldehyde certifications

AIDIMME performs product certification services for manufacturers, verifying compliance with current legislation relating to this compound (CARB Phase 2, EPA TSCA Title VI, Formaldehyde Class E1 certification, CHEMVERBOTSV...). Based on this, the formaldehyde emissions of hundreds of products have been certified before they are placed on the market.

AIDIMME is accredited according to UNE-EN ISO/IEC 17065 for product certification in accordance with the legislation US EPA TSCA Title VI and the CARB Phase 2, and the valid certificates issued can be downloaded from our website at the following link: formaldehyde certificates.

The certifications are granted based on random sampling of the final products, after periodic supervision of the production process, verifying the maintenance of production conditions and the effect on emissions when there is a change in raw materials.

Compliance with international laws

The services offered by this laboratory allow verification of compliance with the following legislation:

  • Formaldehyde class E1: 8 EU member states – Austria, Denmark, Germany, Greece, Italy, Lithuania, the Netherlands and Sweden – have adopted national legislation to limit formaldehyde emissions from wood-based panels. These national emission limits usually correspond to emission class E1.
  • CHEMVERBOTSV - Chemical Prohibition Regulation - BAnz AT 26.11.2018 B2 for the German market.

Boards derived from wood and furniture that reach the German market must comply with formaldehyde emission limits of 0,10 ppm measured according to the UNE-EN 16516 or UNE-EN 717-1 standards, with the latter having to double the obtained result. In practice, it is a 50% reduction in formaldehyde class E1 and applies to all types of boards or furniture.

  • US EPA TSCA Title VI for products containing boards derived from wood destined for the US market.
  • California Code of Regulation 17 ATCM 93120 – CARB Phase 2.
  • CANFER - Canadian Environmental Protection Act, 1999, “Formaldehyde Emissions from Composite Wood Products Regulations”.
  • Labeling in construction materials for sale in France: Grenelle Law (Decree No. 2011-321 of the French Ministry of the Environment)

Construction materials used indoors that are marketed in the French market are required to be labeled according to their VOC emissions, after 28 days in a test chamber and subsequent analysis, according to ISO 16000-3, 6, 9 standards. and 11.

This label informs about the emission of volatile substances that are harmful to people in the event of inhalation, on a scale from A+ (practically no emissions) to C (high emission).

  • European Chemical Substances and Mixtures Agency (ECHA) which was requested by the European Commission to prepare an annex XV restriction dossier in accordance with article 69, paragraph 1, of REACH (Regulation of Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of chemical substances) on formaldehyde and its releasers in mixtures and consumer items. A final proposal has been made regarding the restrictions of formaldehyde emissions and in a few months the publication of the European Regulation that refers to the inclusion of a limit of formaldehyde emissions for all products for interior use is expected.

Construction Products Directive Emissions

European Regulation of Construction Products (CE marking)

The Construction Products Regulation (CPR) establishes the harmonized standards for the marketing and free movement of construction products in the single EU market. AIDIMME, as Notified Body No. 1981, carries out formaldehyde emission tests according to the UNE-EN 717-1 standard for the classification of formaldehyde emissions in classes E1 and E2.

Regulation of emissions of volatile organic compounds in construction products in Germany (DIBt/AgBB)

Evaluation procedure for the emissions of volatile and semi-volatile organic compounds (VOCs and SCOVs) in construction products, for their commercialization in German territory, which is based on the UNE-EN 16516 standard, which is carried out in the Construction Quality laboratory. AIDIMME Indoor Air.
