Analysis and evaluation of prototypes for type approval (homologation) of packaging (containers, packaging, large bulk containers IBC and large packagings) for the transport of dangerous goods.

AIDIMME carries out assessments on packaging for the transport of Dangerous Goods at the request of manufacturing companies to verify their suitability for use or to obtain, through the Control Body (CB), a password that identifies that these containers are suitable for the transport of dangerous substances and mixtures.

Depending on the mode of transport, dangerous goods must comply with the characteristics and technical specifications outlined in the regulations. The justification required by these regulations is called type approval (homologation) and is mandatory.

• Type approval passwords are granted by the Ministry of Industry and Tourism, after the presentation of the necessary documentation to the Autonomous Community by a Control Body.
• APPLICABLE REGULATIONS. All packaging intended for the transport of dangerous goods must conform to a type of construction that has been tested and approved according to the regulations in force for the different modes of transport for which it is intended: ADR (road), RID (rail), IMDG (maritime), ICAO (air), … The manufacturers, or their duly authorized representatives, are responsible for such type approval.

Methodology of this service.

The packaging, after advice from the technician at the dangerous goods laboratory, is subjected to the prescribed tests according to its characteristics and potential contents.

• Request to an OC for type approval of a packaging by the company.
• Request for technical information about the product, by AIDIMME. Type approval report, product data sheet, etc.
• Conducting trials.
• Assessment of compliance with specifications or requirements.
• Issuance of report by AIDIMME and test record by the OC.
• Verification by the OC that the company has an implemented quality system.
• Password request by the OC

NOTE: The tasks to be performed by the OC are unrelated to the service, but essential for obtaining type approval.

The company has a product brand that allows it to:

• Demonstrate the suitability of the container or packaging for the transport of the dangerous goods specified in the type approval report.
• To be able to market a product that, in order to be used, must be approved and marked.

AIDIMME offers you:

• Advice on completing the type approval procedures.
• Testing for all types of packaging in accordance with an OC. These include mechanical tests such as drop, stacking, internal pressure or leak tightness tests, chemical compatibility tests, and vibration tests for IBCs for liquids.
• Pre-type approval tests to check what level of testing they would be suitable for.
• AIDIMME participates in various working groups, directly or indirectly related to the application of regulations on dangerous goods. Specifically, AIDIMME coordinates the following Working Groups: GT 4, "Packaging for the transport of dangerous goods", of UNE Standardization Committee 49, and GT2 and "Packaging" of UNE Standardization Committee 192 SC3, both since their creation in 1997 and 2017 respectively. AIDIMME also collaborates with the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility and the Ministry of Industry and Tourism.

For all these reasons, it has knowledge regarding the exact meaning of methods and requirements and about future changes in standards or regulations, as well as having the ability to modify standards, based on the experience provided by its relationship to the sector.
