"FEDER MOTOVEGI"

MOTOVEGI - RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT OF INNOVATIVE MORTARS WITH LOW CARBON FOOTPRINT MADE FROM PLANT FIBERS OF LOCAL ORIGIN

DESCRIPTION

The incorporation of fibers to mortars allows improving their performance, tensile strength, ductility, energy absorption capacity, fatigue behaviour, and resistance to abrasion and impact. When the fibers are vegetable, as is the case in this project, in addition to improving the characteristics of the mortar, it contributes to reducing the carbon footprint by replacing other materials with a high environmental impact with vegetable waste.

The project will analyze different benefits of mortars with vegetable fiber. In this sense, it should be noted that the nature of the fibers, length, shape, percentage in the mixture modify the properties of the compound, also influencing the density, porosity and thermal conductivity, so that the behavior depends on a multitude of factors to be analyzed.

OBJECTIVES

The objective of the project is to develop mortars with a low carbon footprint that improve their performance compared to traditional mortars with and without fibers due to their better mechanical or thermal characteristics. The type of fiber will largely determine the functionality of the mortar. Using local vegetable fibers will achieve a lower environmental impact than in the case of reinforcing metal or plastic fibers. Although the vegetable fiber mortar has been the subject of research, knowledge is limited when it comes to local species from the Mediterranean basin, which is why this project focuses on them, due to their abundance and the fact that they imply revaluing some waste. The ultimate goal is to promote substantial improvement in the construction sector and market around three main focuses: use of new species of fibers, durability comparable to that of mortars with synthetic fibers and improvement in mechanical resistance and low thermal conductivity.
