AVANCLT - RESEARCH AND ADVANCES IN THE USE OF CLT WOOD BOARDS FOR USE UNDER CYCLIC STRESSES




DESCRIPTION

The project has a dual purpose that converges into a common goal, the advancement of construction with CLT (Cross Laminated Timber). On the one hand, it deals with the development, improvement and optimization of CLT boards and their connectors, so that they can withstand cyclic and vibrational stresses, such as those that occur in the case of wind and earthquakes. On the other hand, it investigates how to improve resistance to humidity, its exponent being the degree of delamination that occurs after the action of this agent.
Regarding the carbon footprint, CLT is a beneficial material compared to other materials used in construction with similar properties.
Influencing their mechanical behavior, buildings with CLT present a good response to cyclic and vibrational movements (such as occur in earthquakes), due to:
• High strength/density ratio
• Flexible, undergoing large deformations before collapsing
• High resistance to short-term loads

Of all these properties, according to the literature, the connections between panels are recognized as determining elements for the adequate behavior of the structure capable of dissipating energy (ductility and absence of plasticization) in the face of extraordinary actions of a cyclic nature.
Regarding the degree of delamination in CLT elements, experience indicates that this presents values ​​that do not provide safety, even in certain interior areas where humidity may be high at some point.

OBJECTIVES

Study of new connectors for CLT wooden panels, designed to reduce the risks of destruction of walls and panels during, or subsequently, cyclic and vibration stresses, of the type that occur in seismic movements.
Increase the goodness of CLTs in construction, optimizing their behavior against cyclic movements, by improving connections as critical points that configure the response of the structural system.
Study and improve the behavior against humidity, continuous or punctual, measured through the degree of delamination, which would reduce the risks of openings and, consequently, lack of resistance of the structures in which the CLT are located against situations that They usually occur in certain environments and after extraordinary actions and adverse weather attacks.
To achieve the indicated general objectives, it is necessary:
- Increase the relative knowledge of studies on cyclical movements, as they occur in earthquakes (forces generated and their transmission), for which the projects carried out in leading countries in this field will be delved into ( Chile and Japan, mainly)
- Analyze connectors capable of providing the adequate resistant response of the CLT system (ductile and free of damage to the wood) against cyclic actions, considering the nature of the wood, geometry and types of connection.
- Develop an experimental program for the connectors with tests that simulate movements similar to those that could take place during an earthquake.
- Evaluate the behavior of these connectors through numerical calculation, contrasting it with experimental results, and through improvement proposals to optimize their design.
- Determine and improve the behavior of CLTs against delamination, according to new requirements, in order to withstand the adverse weather conditions (wet and high RH) that usually occur after certain natural disasters, reducing the probability of greater occurrences. damage.

RESULTS OBTAINED

Year 2023: Improved knowledge of CLTs against extreme humidity attacks depending on the type of board gluing:
- with end-glued slats
- with slats without end-gluing

Knowledge of suitable adhesives to overcome the humidity attack requirements of current (recent) regulations.
Development of methodology to analyze, on a laboratory scale, cyclic stresses, such as those of small seismic movements, vibrations produced by transport and machinery, etc..., for CLE itself and with parts joined by connectors.
Knowledge of the behavior of CLT connectors (static and dynamic loads), depending on dimension and type of anchor (screw or stud).

Improving the state of the art:
- Greater knowledge of the behavior of connectors in CLT compared to cyclical actions.
- Advancement in the uses of CLT, compared to efforts and environments.
- Improvement of knowledge of materials and geometry of elements with respect to a given.
