"FEDER - RESISQUIM"

RESISQUIM - INVESTIGATION OF THE RESISTANCE OF CONTAINERS/PACKAGING OF POLYETHYLENE TO DANGEROUS FLAMMABLE, TOXIC AND CORROSIVE LIQUID CHEMICALS

DESCRIPTION

In the paint production, phytosanitary and metal-mechanic sectors, dangerous liquid chemical substances and mixtures are used, such as certain acids, bases, solvents and toxins, normally classified as dangerous goods, which must be transported in good quality containers. Many of these products have formulations that cannot be assimilated to standard liquids, so the short procedure (2 months) cannot be used and therefore the long procedure (7 months) would have to be applied, but with real liquids that make it economically unfeasible. With this information, the RESISQUIM project seeks a procedure for containers to meet the requirements established in current studies that are difficult to apply. Special attention will be paid to the study of the inclusion of recycled plastic in polyethylene.
For the products to be investigated, there is no simple and economically acceptable protocol in the current regulations for dangerous goods, therefore, the development of a protocol for the determination of the resistance of polyethylene containers of various properties with the inclusion of of recycling percentages, to liquid chemical products from the paint, phytosanitary and metal-mechanic sectors.

OBJECTIVES

In order to reduce these incidents and additional costs, the general objective of the project has been defined as the Investigation of the resistance of polyethylene containers/packaging to dangerous flammable, toxic and corrosive liquid chemical products.

The general objective of the project is articulated by the following specific objectives:

- Characterization of the chemical resistance properties of virgin polyethylene and mixtures with recycling with various chemical products used in the paint, phytosanitary and metal-mechanic sectors.
- Definition of analysis to determine the physical-chemical-mechanical characteristics of virgin and recycled plastic material, such as absorption/adsorption tests, resistance to cracking in an active environment, tensile strength, etc.
- Preparation of an analysis protocol to determine the chemical compatibility of containers for certain dangerous goods that cannot be assimilated to standard liquids.
- Validation of the protocol through laboratory analysis of complete containers.
