SMARTCHAIR - DEVELOPMENT OF IOT-BASED IDENTIFICATION INTERFACES FOR GENERIC URBAN SCENARIOS




DESCRIPTION

SMARTCHAIR will investigate the problems associated with a wheelchair system that moves between two points in the environment using a meshed network beacon positioning system (MESH), developed in the IMOLAB project, and that detects and avoids obstacles using environmental recognition techniques (or performs an emergency stop when it is not possible to avoid obstacles).

OBJECTIVES

The general objective is the development of an autonomous motorized wheelchair system, where the person chooses the destination point and starts the engine to be taken to their destination.

The specific objectives are the following.
- Development of a control console with a touch screen that serves as an interface between the person and the autonomous wheelchair.
- Obstacle detection radar sensors
- Wireless telecommunications system based on the mesh network (MESH) of the IMOLAB project. This system allows the autonomous wheelchair to obtain the signal intensity measurement of each beacon that is within the detection range along with its geolocation. An algorithm, which will be developed in this project, will allow three or more beacons to be taken to perform a triangulation of the position of the system to determine its geolocation. The error of this geolocation is expected to be less than the ten meter error of the GPS signal. The use of the electronic map and the obstacle radar sensors will determine the presence of the walls of the indoor area to refine the geolocation of the autonomous wheelchair.
- Development of navigation software based on the beacons of the IMOLAB project to determine the route that the autonomous wheelchair must follow to reach its destination.
- Development of obstacle classification software to determine if it is possible to avoid them by modifying the trajectory or emergency stop in the event that it is impossible to continue navigating.
Development of communication software to send reports about the obstacles found so that the need to send personnel to remove them from the path is determined.
