ATILA - ADDITIVE IMPLANTS

DESCRIPTION

Study and development of a high protection additive manufacturing process based on multi laser direct wire deposition (LWMD) for the processing of highly reactive materials. Application to implants in Ti64-ELI

OBJECTIVES

The main objective of the project is the development of an additive manufacturing process based on laser wire metal deposition (LWMD) for the processing of highly reactive materials for the manufacture of highly demanding parts, such as personalized Ti64 ELI implants.
In addition to obtaining a material with low oxygen content, the new LWMD system must meet all the mechanical requirements demanded in the biomedical implant standards. Process parameters will be developed to achieve the density, the elastic and tensile limit and the elongations required of the implants.
To control these properties during the process, as well as to reduce defects such as warping, shrinkage or residual stress, the project will develop a simulation model of the new LWMD.
In addition, methods to increase the surface porosity and generate a better bioactive surface will be investigated. Ultrashort pulsed laser ablation to modify implant surfaces has already been used before, but it needs to evolve for processing complex geometries in short batches, as required by medium/large size implants.
