"FERRINCH"

FERRINCH - DEVELOPMENT OF CONCRETE REINFORCED WITH FIBERS FROM METAL WASTE

DESCRIPTION

Fiber-reinforced concrete improves the non-linear behavior of concrete, especially against tensile stresses, stitching cracks, preventing them from propagating and allowing the concrete to continue resisting traction, being especially effective for resisting dynamic loads or where high stress control is required. the cracking Currently, there is a wide variety of mortars on the market that incorporate plastic, carbon and metal fibers, among others, as reinforcement. The novelty of this project consists of using fibers and chips generated as waste in the industrial processes of machining metal parts. In this way, it is possible, on the one hand, to avoid the industrial manufacture of fibers, reducing the environmental impact and embedded energy that this entails, and, on the other, to reuse industrial waste with minimal treatment. The project aims to develop a highly sustainable procedure for the reuse of mechanical waste and to analyze the properties that concrete acquires thanks to the incorporation of fibers, evaluating the applications of greatest interest.

OBJECTIVES

The objective of the project is to develop a high-performance concrete that contributes to the circular economy through the use of steel fibers that result as a residue from machining processes, lamination, ..., with a very low environmental and chrematistic cost in the previous treatment. The fibers will be obtained from the shavings derived from the metal industry and will be prepared for reuse with the least number of operations possible, reducing the embedded energy that the traditional fiber generation process would imply, providing a solution to the management of this waste. . The role of the fibers will be to reduce cracking, improve its resistance capacity and confer other properties such as resistance to fire, abrasion and thermal performance such as increased conductivity.
The specific objectives are: To develop a treatment process that optimizes the preparation of fibers for reuse; Obtain the proportions, fiber size and slenderness that provide the right consistency and the best performance for the concrete, taking into account the sustainability of the product and its manufacturing process; Analyze alternatives for the use of a combination of fibers from different origins, comparatively evaluating the properties of the concrete; Experimentally characterize the properties of mechanical resistance, against fire and thermal; Carry out a comparative study that reflects the percentages of technical and environmental improvement, which represents the use of fiber coming directly from steel waste compared to industrial fiber and fibers of other natures; Propose different applications, structural and non-structural, depending on the composition and its performance; Carry out activities to disseminate and transfer this knowledge to the business sector.

RESULTS OBTAINED

Year 2023: The results obtained are: The determination of the type of waste metal chips that allows their selection as concrete reinforcement. The influence of the treatment for the incorporation of recycled steel shavings in the concrete dosage. Knowledge of how fiber morphology affects the performance of the mixture. The dosage of recycled shavings in the formulations. The evaluation of the thermal response of concrete against fire and as an energy accumulator. The possible uses of concrete reinforced with recycled fibers.
