LIXMIX - CIRCULAR ECONOMY APPLIED TO THE SUSTAINABLE VALORIZATION OF ELECTRONIC AND METALIZED WASTE

DESCRIPTION

The increase in demand for electrical and electronic equipment (EEE) and the decrease in useful life generate a huge amount of waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) from equipment such as mobile phones, television, computers, printers, modems, fax machines, photocopiers, LED/LCD Monitors, medical equipment etc.

This waste contains a variety of hazardous substances, which can cause environmental problems when not managed properly therefore recycling WEEE is of paramount importance to the environment. Furthermore, secondary metal resources such as WEEE contain base metals (Cu, Al, Zn, Ni…) and precious metals (Au, Ag, Pt…) comparable to the metal content in ores and concentrates. Printed electronic circuits in particular are a potential secondary source of materials, as well as a growing research topic known as urban mining. Likewise, metallized plastic waste represents a toxic waste whose management is complicated due to its composition (ABS plastic, Ni, Cu, Cr).

OBJECTIVES

The general objective of the project is based on the development of a methodology consisting of sequential leaching in two stages: bioleaching and electroleaching.
In the first, a leaching agent will be biologically generated from acid waste, extracting the base metals.
In electroleaching, an electro-Fenton process will also be used from waste, which will allow the extraction of valuable metals.
The general objective will be achieved from the following specific objectives:
- Define bioleaching methodology through the use of microorganisms as biological producers of leachants and adaptation to a sequential recovery process.
- Define an electroleaching methodology for the extraction of valuable metals through an electroFenton process
- Identification and selection of acid waste from our companies potentially usable both for the production of leachants in bioleaching and reagent for electro-leaching
- Design of a prototype for the recovery of metals based on the results obtained, taking into account the leaching yields as well as a future concentration and purification of the different metals contained in each stream.
- Analysis of the technical, environmental and economic feasibility of the proposed process in comparison with the processes currently applied.
- Analyze the legalization process of a waste (acid pickling) for its use as a by-product in order to minimize the current cost of waste storage and management.
- Transmit knowledge to our companies to promote their competitiveness based on the generation of new knowledge.

RESULTS OBTAINED

Year 2023: At LIXMIX, a sequential treatment has been developed in which, during the first stage, the base metals are recovered with leaching agents generated by different microorganisms. To do this, the appropriate microorganisms have been selected and cultivated through the combination of different strains, studying and adapting the conditions of the environment for the generation of the leaching agent. Once obtained, the variables of each process (plastics and circuits) have been optimized to maximize the extraction of metals in conditions of low environmental impact. Very good yields have been obtained for the extraction of copper from the circuits, allowing valuable metals to be concentrated for the next stage of the process. For metallized plastics, a high extraction of the different metals contained has been obtained, also allowing the recovery of ABS plastic. The project has also addressed the study of the legal conditions and administrative permits necessary for the methodology to be considered as by-products of acid waste used as raw material. For more information, see the Results Report.

Deliverables:

Year 2022: During the year 2022, the tasks corresponding to the cultivation of bacteria capable of generating leaching agents for the base metals corresponding to metallized plastic waste as well as waste from electronic devices have been carried out.
Specifically, the relevant leaching tests have been carried out on metallized plastic waste. It has been possible to separate practically all of the ABS plastic from the rest of the metals that cover it in a sustainable way, using acid waste from companies in the surface treatment sector of the Valencian community as a leaching agent. This recycling route is in line with the principles of the circular economy, extending the useful life of materials and components through processes with low environmental impact. To recover these metals, pickling acids from the surface treatment sector of the Valencian Community have been used.
On the other hand, the project is also carrying out the leaching of electronic circuits, where research is focused on the extraction of metals, including precious metals. For the dissolution of precious metals, there are electro-assisted processes for the generation of chlorine by valorizing industrial pickling acids. In parallel, the cultivation of the different bacteria, their combination and their survival in a high-capacity bioreactor continues.
With all this, different leaching steps and physical separations are combined to achieve closed-loop recycling in line with the principles of the circular economy.
