"INPROTEM"

INPROTEM - INVESTIGATION OF THE CUSHIONING CAPACITY OF DIFFERENT MATERIALS WITH PROTECTIVE CAPACITY, TAKING INTO ACCOUNT THE DIFFERENT ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS THAT OCCUR IN THE DISTRIBUTION OF THE PRODUCTS.

DESCRIPTION

The INPROTEM project is going to investigate the protection capacity of different packaging materials, taking as a reference factor the conditions of temperature and relative humidity that occur in the logistics cycles of any industrial product.
The proposed experimental research aims to establish the guidelines for the mechanical behavior of different protective packaging systems against external environmental conditions.

OBJECTIVES

- Characterization of different protection materials, subjected to different controlled environmental conditions.

- Establish the response of a cushioning packaging system, against the external environmental conditions that occur in the distribution, that is, vibrations and shocks, together with the environmental temperature and humidity conditions.

Project Number: 22200062
Grant Agreement: IMDEEA / 2022/43
Duration: From 01/06/2022 to 30/09/2023

Coordinated in AIDIMME by: SÁNCHEZ LÓPEZ, FRANCISCO JOSÉ
R&D Line: PACKAGING SYSTEMS

RESULTS OBTAINED

Year 2023: Among all the materials analyzed throughout the project, we have selected 2 of them, and we show their analysis below:
DIE-CUT CORRUGATED CARDBOARD EDGE 2:
A very different response is seen between the 1st impact and the average of the 2nd to 5th impact.
The values obtained after the first impact show that the material has a great cushioning capacity, obtaining values below 60 G's in a range of products between 5 and 30 kg, however, in the accumulation of impacts the corner pieces collapse. and the damping values are above 115 G's, which tells us that these corner pieces can only protect very robust products against the accumulation of impacts.
The results obtained in the 1st impact, in environmental conditions of high humidity, are similar to those obtained in standard environmental conditions, which indicates that the design of the corner piece manages to minimize the loss of properties of the corrugated cardboard when it is subjected to humid environments. .
With these results, a way is opened to continue research with this type of samples, developing and characterizing different designs and qualities of corrugated cardboard, with the aim of achieving an improvement in its capacity to absorb repetitive impacts.

KENAF P30 FIBER:
There is not a big difference between the 1st impact and the average of the 2nd to 5th impact. This tells us that the material maintains its elastic capacity when subjected to various impacts, which is an advantage over other cellulosic materials.
A decrease in damping is seen when the samples are subjected to high humidity conditions, reaching a difference of 39% at the point of greatest damping.
The values obtained indicate that this material, under standard environmental conditions, is capable of absorbing repetitive impacts and protecting fragile products weighing up to 5 kg.
In high humidity environmental conditions, this material is capable of absorbing repetitive impacts and protecting moderately fragile products up to 5 kg.
These results open a way to continue research with this material, with the aim of minimizing its loss of damping capacity in environmental conditions of high humidity.
