"FGVA - MAT0 AISMAT"

AISMAT - RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT OF POROUS MATERIALS (II)

DESCRIPTION

Thermal insulation contributes to limiting energy consumption, improving comfort and the sensation of hygrothermal well-being of users. The AISMAT project seeks to deepen the knowledge about the products used in insulation, especially in the case of those used in bulk as filler, studying the relationship between its structure and the thermal, acoustic and mechanical benefits offered.

OBJECTIVES

The general objective of the AISMAT project is to study the relationship between the microstructure and the properties of thermal insulators in order to allow the development of advanced materials.

The specific objectives of the project are:
- Analyze the relationship between porosity and compactness of materials in relation to mechanical properties (compression, compression creep, traction ...)
- Study the influence of its structure on thermal and acoustic comfort.
- Improved thermal insulation provided by insulating materials
- Development and optimization of composite materials

RESULTS OBTAINED

Year 2022: The use of cellulose insulation in construction contributes significantly to the energy efficiency of homes by reducing heat transfer between the interior and exterior, thus maintaining a comfortable temperature and reducing heating and cooling costs. This renewable, recyclable and biodegradable material has a low carbon footprint, contributing to environmental sustainability and reducing waste generation.
The AISMAT project focuses on studying, generating and disseminating knowledge related to bulk cellulose insulators, seeking a deeper understanding of cellulose as a construction material. Although manufacturing the insulator is not complicated, it requires specialized equipment. Despite this, the product is considered optimal for use as a filler insulator and as a core in construction solutions and composite panels.
The results obtained reveal that the cellulose insulator has thermal conductivity values between approximately 0,03 and 0,04 W/mK, depending on the raw material, the defibration and the application density. Although highly effective and sustainable, it is crucial to ensure its resistance to fire and humidity, which may require additional treatments.
The potential of the insulator as an acoustic material has been explored, evaluating its resistance to settlement and its capacity depending on the application density. Furthermore, its fire resistance has been investigated through studies that compare European and American regulations, pointing out significant differences in the classification.
To improve the properties against fire and fungi, studies have been carried out with additives, such as borax salts and boric acid. The research highlights the differences between European and American regulations in the classification of the reaction to fire of formulations.
Resistance to fungal growth has been addressed through research on salt content and its relationship to efficacy. Likewise, efforts have been undertaken to obtain stabilized cellulose, seeking greater stability and less settling, although challenges are recognized to be overcome in future research.
In summary, the use of bulk cellulose insulation proves to be beneficial for energy efficiency and sustainability in construction, but it is essential to address aspects such as fire resistance, settlement and mold formation to maximize its performance and durability.
