"FGVA - TOX0 CHEMTOX"

CHEMTOX – EVALUATION OF ALTERNATIVE CHEMICAL METHODOLOGIES IN THE DETERMINATION OF VOLATILE TOXIC COMPOUNDS.

DESCRIPTION

This project tries to find alternative measurement methodologies for the determination of harmful chemical compounds, including the determination of VOCs in indoor environments, such as formaldehyde, or the determination of high molecular weight substances in inks. To do this, these methodologies must be able to correlate with the standard method, maintaining, at least, the same selectivity and sensitivity, and also provide an obvious improvement in the process, such as the reduction of chemical reagents involved, the reduction of waste generated or the possibility of using a smaller amount of sample.

OBJECTIVES

Find alternative methodologies for the analytical determination of volatile organic compounds, in order to increase the sensitivity of the measurement and reduce polluting residues.

Develop a method that allows the evaluation of the migration of high molecular weight regulated substances, to ensure compliance with Regulation 1935/2004 in coatings and printing inks.

Obtaining a correlation system between small-scale methods with large-scale methods that allows the prediction of the behavior of a material using a small sample.

Study of the emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOC) in materials and products used in the habitat, depending on the expected temperature of use, using the technique of thermogravimetry coupled with gas chromatography with mass detector (TGA-GC- MS).

RESULTS OBTAINED

Year 2022: During this project, the results of the test methods in the determination of formaldehyde in air of chromotropic acid have been intercorrelated with that of acetylacetone. The results show that both methods are equivalent and that the same results are obtained. This allows the elimination of the use of the chromotropic acid method, which generates more dangerous waste than that of acetylacetone. On the other hand, a method for analyzing formaldehyde in air has been developed through a procedure that bases its determination on fluorimetry, in order to detect free formaldehyde at lower concentrations than with other methods. Currently, after the development of AIDIMME, it is concluded that, although the method is basically appropriate, it has certain weaknesses, such as the high drift of the measurements and the high variability of the measurement of the targets. The study of compatibility between the results offered by an automatic equipment for determining formaldehyde emissions versus the regulatory methods provides appropriate equivalences, although it is planned to delve deeper into this activity to solve the problems detected, especially when it comes to concentrations. elevated levels of free formaldehyde and calibration processes. In the area of smoke production and toxicity of materials, it has been possible to reach the conclusion that smoke generation depends on multiple factors that can lead to diverse results depending on the physical nature of the test method (closed chamber measurement, open-air experiment). large scale, versus tube measurement with forced extraction, small scale experiment). Since there is an acceptable correlation between methods, it must continue to be improved in this study. Finally, work has been done on the optimization of the analysis methodology based on gas chromatography (GC-MS), with the aim of working with the quantification of solid and liquid samples through SPME (solid phase micro-extraction). ), increasing the sensitivity of the method in these samples, thus reducing the quantification limits.
