"SENSOESTANT"

SENSOESTANT- DEVELOPMENT OF PROTOTYPES BASED ON SENSORS TO INCREASE SAFETY IN THE USE OF FURNITURE WITH DRAWERS, SHELVES AND ELEMENTS HANGED ON WALLS

DESCRIPTION

AIDIMME will develop, during the SENSOESTANT project, systems that allow the safe use of furniture with drawers, shelves and elements hanging on the walls, using sensor-based technology, without modifying the design or materials of the furniture. These devices, on the one hand, will control whether the maximum recommended opening cycles for drawers have been carried out and whether the force required to actuate them is adequate. On the other hand, they will verify the anchors on the wall, warning if the wardrobe is separated from it well in advance of its fall. As well as devices that measure the loads or deformations of the shelves as the weight they support increases, warning when the load or deformation is at the limit of safety.
To achieve this purpose it is necessary, after studying the furniture and the efforts to which it will be subjected during its life and the typical damages that may appear, select the appropriate sensor, so that it collects the appropriate information, interprets it and provides the appropriate data that notify the user of the status of the furniture elements, developing the device to be incorporated into it.

OBJECTIVES

The general objective of the project is to provide our companies and end users with products for the safe use of furniture with drawers, shelves and elements hanging on the walls, through sensor-based technology, without modifying the design or materials of said products.

The specific objectives are:
- Study the market and the regulations regarding the requirements and existing devices that guarantee a safe use of furniture with drawers, when loading shelves and elements hanging on the walls.
- Select the necessary sensors and components to later develop the devices that will allow safer use of the elements under study.
- Evaluate its incorporation into the drawers, shelves and elements hanging on the walls, studying how to use the physical measurement to assess the situation of the furniture element, the allowed limits, ... and how this information is entered into the sensor.
- Analyze the operation of these devices in the elements under study, to verify their correct operation and adaptation to needs.
- Optimize, if necessary, the devices to improve and better adapt their verifications to the elements under study after their analysis in the laboratory.
- Transmit this knowledge to our companies.
- Reduce domestic accidents due to furniture problems.
Regarding this last point, it should be noted that domestic accidents are a very important health problem and their prevention remains a pending issue. According to statistics, more than half of all accident cases take place at home. Nearly two million accidents occur annually in homes, with the problems derived from furniture mainly related to its sagging, uncontrolled opening of drawers and breaking of shelves, usually due to overloads.

RESULTS OBTAINED

Year 2022: Provide our companies and end users with products that allow safe use of furniture with drawers, shelves and elements hanging on walls, using sensor-based technology, without modifying the design or materials of said products. For this purpose, different electronic devices that control safety aspects of furniture have been designed, developed, incorporated and optimized.
During the execution of the project, 3 types of devices have been developed.
Control device for furniture with drawers.
Through proximity sensors that detect the position of the drawer, and thanks to the implementation of a microcontroller, it is possible to know both the number of accumulated opening and closing cycles, as well as whether an incomplete closing occurs. Once the use of the drawer has been monitored, the functionality has been included to notify the user when a repeated failure is detected in closing the drawer or when the established cycle safety threshold is exceeded.

Control device for furniture anchored to the wall.
Thanks to the incorporation of two contact sensors configured in the correct position of the furniture, which detect if a displacement occurs in a vertical or horizontal direction greater than 0,3 millimeters, a system has been achieved that provides a preventive warning to the user in the event of a furniture falling, preventing possible personal injury.

Control device for furniture with shelves.
By incorporating strain gauge sensors and the appropriate electronic instrumentation to work with this type of signals, a system has been developed capable of alerting the user when a shelf exceeds the previously established safe bending limit, mainly due to overloads on it.
