"FGVA BIO0 SISPATINT 21"

SISPATINT 2021 TEST, CONFIGURATION AND IMPROVEMENT OF THE PATINT SYSTEM, AND STUDY AND ANALYSIS OF BIOMATERIALS

DESCRIPTION

Within the AIDIMME Biomaterials R&D line, the SISPATINT 2021 project includes several applied research activities to test, configure and improve the PATINT system, as well as activities for the study and analysis of biomaterials.
The innovative PATINT system is an advanced tool for preventive and automated real-time monitoring of wood in works of art, heritage buildings and new construction. This very flexible and scalable system will be compatible with Smart Cities platforms.

OBJECTIVES

- Definition of a new architecture of the complete PATINT system to facilitate the connection to the cloud (cloud computing) and IoT platforms, so that the receiving node ceases to be a mere repeater and becomes an embedded, closed and autonomous computer, with Sufficient capacity to record the state of the wood at all times and generate the appropriate alerts.
- Design, implementation, configuration and testing of a new receiver node of the PATINT system, based on a Raspberry Pi or similar, according to the new architecture.
- Development, configuration and testing of a complete network of wood monitoring sensors in works of art and heritage buildings and new buildings, compatible with 3G / 4G / 5G / WiFi and Smart Cities, and based on the new architecture.
- Increased knowledge of biomaterials.
- Analyze and characterize wooden structures.
- Promote the rehabilitation of wooden structures and the use of wood in new construction.
- Contribute to the conservation of the abundant historical heritage of the Valencian Community.
- Study and analysis of biomaterials (ligno-cellulosic, composites, etc.).
- Promote the participation of the center and companies in European and international projects.
- Identification and analysis of R&D lines of the center, through the analysis of information and participation in different committees, platforms and working groups.

RESULTS OBTAINED

Year 2021: A new architecture has been designed for the PATINT system that eliminates receiving nodes.
This architecture uses WiFi modules, whose energy consumption is generally much higher than that of other components (LED, photodetector, etc.) and is consequently critical for the battery life of the sensor node. According to the analyzes carried out, by significantly reducing the consumption of the WiFi modules through the adjustment and optimization of the algorithms and configuration parameters, the battery life of the sensor node will not be excessively penalized.
This new architecture presents the following relevant advantages with respect to the initial one and another based on Raspberry Pi or similar: a) There is no limit on the number of sensors per property. In the other architectures there is a limit of 32 sensors for each receiving node; b) The receiving node is eliminated and therefore its management software also disappears; c) The sensors can be installed anywhere in the world, since they use the WiFi network to communicate, instead of the free 868 MHz radio band, which limited their use to Europe; d) Allows direct connection to the cloud and Smart Cities platforms.
In the new architecture, there are no receiving nodes and the sensor nodes are also WiFi nodes (that is, they automatically monitor the wood and also transmit the data obtained via WiFi) and, therefore, include low-energy WiFi modules.
In parallel to all of the above, a network of PATINT sensor nodes has been developed with the original architecture of the system. For this, 10 sensor nodes and 1 receiver node were implemented, programmed and configured, and they were tested in the laboratory first.
The sensor nodes, protected by insulating boxes, were later buried in termite-infested terrain, and the network has since been tested and the data sent by the buried sensor nodes is recorded.
Although the final objective is to test the system in works of art and buildings, it was preliminarily decided to bury the sensor network in land for three reasons: 1) To check its operation in extreme environmental conditions; 2) Have easy access to them in order to facilitate possible checks, component replacements, configuration changes, programming changes, etc.; 3) Verify the stability, robustness and reliability of the network over long periods of time.
