"PROTECT IT 19-20"

PROTECT IT- DEVELOPMENT OF ANTIMICROBIAL COATINGS BASED ON SILVER NANOPARTICLES ON TITANIUM ALLOY EMPLOYED IN PROSTHESIS.

DESCRIPTION

This research project aims to develop antibacterial coatings on Ti-6Al-4V prostheses. The most commonly used material for the manufacture of prostheses is Ti-6Al-4V alloy due to its corrosion resistance, good mechanical properties and great biocompatibility. 2.5 million hip and knee implants are implanted annually. One of the main problems with prosthetic implantation is the infection processes that take place in approximately 2% of cases. This supposes a great economic damage when having to replace the implant, in addition to the need for new surgical processes which affects the patient's quality of life. Therefore, this research project aims to solve this problem through the development of antibacterial coatings based on silver nanoparticles (Ag). The proliferation of bacteria resistant to antibiotic treatments makes it necessary to find alternatives to these conventional treatments. Ag + ions released from Ag nanoparticles show broad spectrum antibacterial activity, due to the different mechanisms with which they can act on bacteria. The project aims to develop coatings that incorporate Ag nanoparticles. For the fixation of silver nanoparticles, different chemical deposition techniques using sol-gel technology will be used. It is intended to obtain a distribution and a nanoparticle size suitable for this purpose.

OBJECTIVES

The objective of the project is to develop antibacterial coatings on TiAl6V4 prostheses to reduce the incidence of joint prosthesis infection.

The general objective will be achieved from the following specific objectives:

1. Develop antibacterial coatings using different technologies to adhere to the surface of the Ti6Al4V material. These coatings will include in their structure inorganic nanoparticles with bactericidal capacity (Ag nanoparticles have proven to be the most effective). It is intended to achieve a progressive and prolonged release Ag + so that the bactericidal effect can act for more than 30 days.
2. Apply the coatings developed on solid prostheses and on prostheses manufactured using advanced manufacturing processes.
3. Evaluate the best surface treatment so that the coating is properly fixed on the surface of the metal parts.
4. Evaluate the best method of coating synthesis between several sol-gel synthesis routes.
5. Evaluate the release of Ag + over time to determine its possible bactericidal efficacy.
6. In vitro evaluation of the antibacterial activity of the coatings against Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermidis.

Choose the most appropriate technique for the deposition of antibacterial coatings from the results obtained.
