"ANTIBACTERIAL 19-20"

ANTIBACTERIAL - DEVELOPMENT OF SURFACES WITH ANTIMICROBIAL PROPERTIES THROUGH THE APPLICATION OF FINISHES WITH BIOCIDAL PROPERTIES OF NATURAL ORIGIN AND ENVIRONMENTALLY SUSTAINABLE.

DESCRIPTION

The growth of microorganisms in objects, surfaces, etc. It is virtually inevitable and inherent to life on our planet. Depending on the nature of the surface, growth will occur to a greater or lesser extent, however it will be present in most cases.
This presence and growth of microorganisms can lead to rapid deterioration of the material and, ultimately, to cause infections and problems in people's health.
Especially there are surfaces that, due to their nature and use, are more likely to present bacterial and / or fungal growths, such as shower trays, due to their continuous contact with water and skin, kitchen countertops, due to the moisture and the use of raw food on its surface, etc.
However, at present, synthetic biocides, metal nanoparticles, etc. are beginning to be used with greater or lesser success. To tackle this problem. What is not being taken into account is the extent to which these substances can in turn harm the health of people and the environment.
It is in this context that the need for this project arises. From AIDIMME we want to develop the use of new biocidal products (essential oils, molecules from plants, etc.) whose origin is natural but without losing biocidal efficacy can be applied to surfaces at high risk of bacterial proliferation, such as shower trays , wooden countertops, boards, etc. And that at the same time, the application and use of these products is not an added risk to health and the environment.
The ANTIBACTERIAL project will provide our companies with products and processes to increase the resistance of their surfaces to the attack of microorganisms, using biodegradable natural products, coming from plants and trees, without environmental impact and not harmful to health.

OBJECTIVES

The general objective of the project is to provide our companies with products and processes to increase the resistance of their surfaces to the attack of microorganisms, so that in turn, the commercialization of products with high added value, more competitive and environmentally friendly is promoted. . In this way, it is also intended to favor the use of biodegradable natural products, from plants and trees, without environmental impact or harmful to health, to the detriment of the use of synthetic biocides or heavy metals, which damage the environment and organisms .
The specific objectives are:
Study and characterize the currently existing antimicrobial surfaces and the biocidal principles they use.
Thoroughly evaluate existing biocides of natural origin, focusing on the most suitable for our surfaces.
Develop procedures for applying the selected natural products on the different surfaces under study of the project.
Characterize the surfaces applied with natural biocides to assess their biocidal activity.
Optimize the results and transmit this knowledge to our companies.

RESULTS OBTAINED

2020 Year: Of all the materials characterized in the ANTIBACTERIAL project, the metallic ones are the ones that have the best performance against microbiological contamination. However, wood-derived materials such as boards, ceramics and resins used in the manufacture of mineral-loaded surfaces are susceptible to bacteria and fungus growth. Unless the manufacturer adds some type of biocide that clearly improves the hygienic performance of the material. As for additives and paints with a marked antimicrobial character, the chemical preservatives and biocides that are mostly used in the products tested have been DCOITs (CAS 64359-81-5), IPBC (CAS 55406-53-6), CMIT / MIT (CAS: 55965-84-9), BIT (CAS: 2634-33-5), DCMU, also called Diuron (CAS: 330-54-1), zinc pyrithione (CAS 13463-41-7), octylinone (CAS 26530-20-1) and silver (CAS 7440-22-4). All of them, to a greater or lesser extent, have a good antimicrobial spectrum as registered preservatives, although according to the results obtained, the biocidal effect of zinc pyrithione and silver stands out. The results as a whole show how chemical biocides have a good antimicrobial effect, in fact their registration at European level, under the protection of Regulation (EU) No. 528 / 2012 of BPR biocides, guarantees their effectiveness. However, all of them have proven toxic or ecotoxicological effects to a greater or lesser extent and, as of today, their long-term effect is still unknown. That is why, in the present project the first results are already being obtained using biocides of natural origin, whose good biocidal capacity runs in parallel with its lower toxic spectrum. The course of the project is being focused on the evaluation of the antimicrobial capacity of selected natural biocides applied in concrete materials and for daily use together with the collaborating companies of the project.
